What is the Internet of Things, What is IoT Technology?

What is the Internet of Things? The Internet of Things (IoT) is a system of interrelated computing devices, mechanical and digital machines, objects, animals or people that are provided with unique identifiers and the ability to transfer data over a network without requiring human-to-human or human-to-computer interaction.

IoT is a concept that is slowly but surely catching the fancy of people. It is a concept with a lot of potentials to positively impact our lives.

Simple definition (What is the Internet of Things): To put it in simple words, it simply involves connecting any device with an on and off switch to the internet (and/or to each other). It can include anything from a cell phone to a toaster to an oven or a car. Gartner, the analyst firm estimates over 26 billion connected devices by 2020! Thus, the IoT is a giant network of connected things.

Why is it important to be connected? Imagine, your toaster knows how well you like your slice of bread toasted! Your car knows which route is choked with traffic and which one is not and is also able to communicate the time of your arrival for that all-important meeting! Your alarm clock not only wakes you up at the time you desire but is also able to communicate with the coffee-machine to keep a hot pot of coffee ready for you! At the workplace, your photocopier knows when it is running low on paper and ink is able to place an order for the same! The possibilities are endless.

If possibilities and opportunities are endless, IoT also raises a number of security concerns. IoT envisages billions of devices connected together. What if someone hacks into your alarm clock and gets all information about you? It also raises the issue of privacy and data sharing. With so many devices connected to each other, the amount of data being generated will be massive. A way has to be figured out to store, track and analyze the data.

IoT as a concept sounds promising, but it comes with its challenges. The way ahead will be to educate more and more people about IoT and figure out ways to overcome the challenges!
