Dubai Tested its World’s First Autonomous Pods
Dubai Tested its World’s First Autonomous Pods, Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) of Dubai has propelled the primary trail of the world’s first self-driving pods named NX1 at the World Government Summit. The autonomous pods designed and made in cooperation with NEXT Future Transportation Inc. are meant to travel shortly to medium distances with a capacity to accommodate 10 passengers for at least 3 hours on a single charge and can be recharged over 6 hours.
The two driverless pods can travel individually in dedicated lanes and can be coupled together in less than 5 seconds or detached in 5 seconds, depending upon the rider’s destination.
“These unique pods are the part of RTA’s efforts under Dubai Future Accelerators initiatives in order to transform Dubai into the smartest city in the world,” said Mattar al-Tayer, RTA Director-General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors.
“The successful initial tests will bring a revolution in the transportation systems which enable innovative mobility solutions and ease snarls in the city. These autonomous pods will run on virtual pre-configured and programmed lane and will provide smooth, quick and innovative means of transport,” added Mattar al-Tayer.
According to RTA, each pod comprises 3D cameras and electromechanical technologies to function coupling and detaching processes which can be done while the pod is in motion and measures 2.87m in length, 2.24m in width and 2.82m in height. Weighs around 1500 kilograms, the autonomous pods have three protection systems in order to avoid crashes and to have full control.
The Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum has directed the initial test of these autonomous units and displayed the two full-scale prototypes of these pods at Madinat Jumeirah.
In a move towards the driverless transportation system, RTA has come to an agreement with the American NEXT Future Inc. to provide autonomous transport units as part of the initial phase of Dubai Future Accelerators.
