Millikan Fellowship, the California Institute of Technology Distinguished Alumni Award, and the IIT Roorkee Distinguished Alumnus Award, among others.

Dr. Sudhir’s journey in academia and engineering is distinguished by a commitment to excellence and a passion for advancing knowledge. He holds a Bachelor of Civil Engineering from the University of Roorkee (now IIT Roorkee) and subsequent master’s and doctoral degrees from the esteemed California Institute of Technology, Pasadena. Prior to his tenure at BHU, Dr. Sudhir held several esteemed positions in academia, including serving as a professor at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in Kanpur. During his tenure at IIT Kanpur, he played a pivotal role in advancing research and teaching in earthquake engineering, establishing himself as an innovative academic leader. His tenure as Dean of Resource Planning and Generation further solidified his reputation as a visionary leader committed to academic excellence.

In 2009, Dr. Sudhir embarked on a new challenge as the founding director of the Indian Institute of Technology Gandhinagar (IITGN), where he shaped the institute’s vision and fostered a culture of excellence and innovation. Over three terms, he played a crucial role in establishing IITGN as a premier institution known for its cutting-edge research and academic rigour.

Dr. Sudhir’s expertise lies in earthquake engineering and structural engineering, with a focus on seismic design codes, the dynamics of buildings, and post-earthquake studies. His research has had a significant impact on improving seismic safety and resilience, particularly in developing countries, where his work has contributed to saving lives and protecting communities from the devastation of earthquakes.

Beyond academia, Dr. Sudhir’s impact extends to international platforms, evident through his presidency of the International Association of Earthquake Engineering (IAEE) from 2014 to 2018 and his election as a member of the U.S. National Academy of Engineering in 2021. His research publications, including works on earthquake rebuilding, hazard response, and seismic analysis, have significantly contributed to advancing knowledge in the field.
