Former Amul Chief RS Sodhi Roped In By Reliance Retail To Drive Grocery Biz

Reliance Retail Ventures, the retail arm of Reliance Industries Limited (RIL), roped in former Amul chief RS Sodhi to lead the grocery business. Sodhi served as the former MD of the Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation(GCMMF) and known for the Amul brand all over India.

Reliance Retail, India’s leading retail provider, decided to expand its grocery business with a focus on vegetables and fruits.

Isha Ambani-led business Reliance Retail is all set to expand its omnichannel distribution, with the help of Sodhi’s proven experience in retail’s segment. RS Sodhi has served GCMMF for 41 years and stepped down from the position of MD in January 2023. According to the sources, Sodhi will reportedly share his expertise and guide the firm to compete against the biggest brand in the grocery sector. Reliance Retail’s focus now is on expanding the Fast Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) division by introducing a new product line like Campa Cola.

No exact statement is coming from RS Sodhi and Reliance Retail’s side yet. However, some sources revealed that the role of the former Amul chief would be to help Isha Ambani’s lead retail business to compete against Amul and Mother Dairy in the future.

During the tenure of MD, Sodhi has been one of the biggest reasons behind Amul’s success in the retail segment. The experience of Sodhi led Amul to add premium chocolates and beverages to its portfolio. As a result, Amul’s revenue grew from Rs 8,000 crore to Rs 72,000 in the last 12 years.

Reliance Retail will expect such results from Sodhi as it would like to leverage his expertise to boost the grocery business. The next move of RS Sodhi might be understanding customer segmentation and creating a retail strategy to compete with the most prominent players in the grocery segment.
