Travel and tourism are two of India’s biggest industries, with a total revenue of around $178 billion. Recently, religious places have become hot spots for tourists and travellers in India. According to a report by MakeMyTrip Travel Trends, Indians are increasingly travelling to spiritual places in India. The report also claimed that the search for spiritual places in tier-2 and tier-3 cities has increased by 97% in the last two years.
Among these spiritual places, Ayodhya takes the top spot. According to the MMT Travel Trends Report, travel searches for Ayodhya increased by 585% in 2023. Other spiritual places where travel searches increased include Ujjain and Badrinath. Travel searches for both places increased by 359% and 343%, respectively. Many travel experts believe the recent coronation dubbed ‘Praan Pratishtha’ of the Lord Ram temple in Ayodhya has renewed people’s interest in spiritual places.
In addition, the MMT report stated that the number of people who take more than 3 trips in a year increased by 25% in the country. It also mentioned that the top searched tourist locations from Delhi were Rishikesh and Amritsar.
Regarding weekend getaways, Jim Corbett National Park in Uttarakhand became the top tourist attraction, with an increase of 131% in 2023 compared to 2022. Ooty and Munnar closely followed it as the best weekend getaways.
