The Architect of Digital Evolution in Pharma
VARAHABHATLA N S SARMA
Corporate Head - IT,
In the pharmaceutical industry, a single system failure can mean millions lost, stalled drug production, or even regulatory shutdowns. With cybersecurity threats rising by 300% in healthcare and global pharma IT investments projected to exceed $17 billion by 2026, the need for resilient, secure, and scalable IT infrastructures has never been more critical. At the forefront of this digital revolution is Varahabhatla N S Sarma, a 24-year IT veteran who has dedicated his career to bridging the gap between innovation and compliance in the high-stakes pharma sector. Just as a well-architected system must adapt to ever-changing demands, Sarma has continuously evolved—from mastering IT infrastructure to leading enterprise-wide digital transformations at major pharma companies. Now, as Corporate Head – IT at Vasudha Pharma Chem Ltd., he is leading SAP S4 HANA RAISE implementation, enterprise automation, cybersecurity fortification, and regulatory compliance initiatives to ensure that technology serves as an enabler, not a liability. His proficiency in Computer System Validation (CSV), Robotic Process Automation (RPA), SAP integration with various digital applications, and pharmaceutical compliance frameworks such as FDA 21 CFR Part 11 and ISO 27001 has established him as a pivotal force in driving Vasudha Pharma’s digital transformation.
But here is the catch, when technology, compliance, and people move in sync, even the toughest transformations become seamless. In the end, the system didn’t just meet expectations – it redefined efficiency in Pharma manufacturing, “Contribution to Affordable Health Care”
The Best Advice “Always stay curious and never stop learning.” That simple advice has pushed me to grow, adapt, and explore beyond my limits.
Stepping back isn’t losing time—it’s investing in coming back stronger. When I unplug with this intention, I return sharper, more focused, and ready to take on the next challenge.
The Bad Advice “Stick to what you know.” Sounds safe, but honestly, it held me back—real growth happens when you step outside your comfort zone.
What tech metaphor best represents your 24-year IT career, and why?
If my career were a tech system, it would be a resilient, scalable architecture in a dynamic environment. I started by laying a strong foundation—mastering fundamentals and earning key certifications—just like any robust system needs a solid base. Over the years, I scaled, adapting to new technologies and expanding my expertise to meet ever-growing challenges. Integration was key; I thrived on cross-functional collaboration, ensuring seamless workflows. Like any resilient system, setbacks only made me stronger. My journey, much like a well-architected system, has been built for growth, adaptability, and lasting impact.
What’s the biggest IT challenge you’ve tackled in pharma, and how did you overcome it?
Bringing a new Electronic Data Capture (EDC) system to life across global sites wasn’t just a challenge—it was a minefield of compliance, integration hurdles, and high stakes. I knew that success meant more than just implementing technology; it had to work flawlessly within strict FDA, EMA and EDQM regulations. Aligning stakeholders early, validating vendors, and ensuring airtight data migration were critical. Training and change management turned resistance into adoption.
How do you bridge the gap between technology and regulatory compliance in a high-stakes industry like pharma?
I see compliance and technology not as rivals but as co-pilots in a high-stakes journey. With everevolving regulations like FDA, EMA, EDQM and ANVISA, I ensure compliance is embedded into tech—not forced onto it later. I align IT and regulatory teams early, making compliance proactive, not reactive. Automation, AI-driven risk management, and blockchain for traceability turn compliance into a strength rather than a hurdle. By integrating security, standardization, and continuous improvement, I build systems that are both cutting-edge and audit-ready. When compliance is woven into technology from the start, it becomes an enabler of innovation, not a bottleneck.
You manage high-stakes IT projects daily; how do you unplug and recharge?
Switching off isn’t always easy when your mind is wired for problem-solving, but I’ve learned that recharging is just as important as delivering results. Exercise is my go-to reset button— whether it’s a morning run or a quick gym session, it clears my head. Disconnecting from screens, even for a short while, makes a huge difference, and nothing beats unwinding with family, a good book, or a weekend getaway.
