Adapt, innovate, and empower —shaping India’s retail future with vision and resilience.”

What challenges did you face in establishing MegaMart Ventures and Grocery 4U, and how did you overcome them?

Establishing these ventures was not without its challenges. The most significant hurdle was building trust in a fiercely competitive market, where gaining customer loyalty takes time and consistency. We overcame this by relentlessly delivering on our promises—be it product quality, competitive pricing, or exceptional customer service. Another major challenge was managing the supply chain while scaling up in such a dynamic environment. To address this, we adopted cutting-edge supply chain management systems and forged strong partnerships with key suppliers. By staying flexible and resilient in our operations, we navigated disruptions and ensured steady growth and customer satisfaction.

How do you see AR and VR transforming shopping, and how are you preparing to use them for customers?

Immersive technologies like AR and VR are transforming retail by boosting customer engagement. These innovations allow virtual try-ons, product previews, and in-store navigation. For instance, AR helps customers visualise how furniture or décor will fit into their homes before buying. At MegaMart Ventures, we’re using AR for interactive product displays and virtual store tours, while Grocery 4U integrates AR-based recipe suggestions, offering customers instant meal ideas by scanning products. These  technologies enhance convenience, excitement, and interactivity, strengthening customer loyalty and the overall shopping experience.

What’s the most innovative solution you've used to address supply chain inefficiencies?

Tackling supply chain inefficiencies required thinking outside the box. We leveraged AIpowered demand forecasting to predict customer needs more accurately, optimising stock levels and minimising wastage. Additionally, we have created a centralised supplier portal to foster real-time collaboration with vendors, improving transparency and reducing delays. This dual approach not only enhanced operational efficiency but also allowed us to respond to demand shifts quickly, ensuring we always deliver on customer expectations with minimal disruption.

In a competitive retail market, what strategies do you use to differentiate your brands?

Differentiation in retail boils down to understanding your customers better than anyone else. Our brands stand out because of our ability to offer personalised shopping experiences, curated product selections, and a strong local connection. We’ve also introduced tech-driven solutions, such as real-time inventory tracking and digital loyalty programmes, which enhance the overall customer experience. Additionally, our commitment to sustainability—by reducing plastic usage and promoting eco-friendly packaging—resonates with today’s conscious consumers.

What’s a leadership decision you took that seemed risky but paid off in the end?

One risky decision was expanding rapidly during a volatile time. Despite advice to be cautious, we moved forward, believing in seizing the right opportunities for long-term growth. The decision required significant investment in infrastructure and technology, but it paid off, allowing us to establish a strong market presence before competitors could catch up. This bold move solidified our position and enabled sustained growth in a competitive environment.

How do you see the coexistence of kirana stores and modern retail chains? How are you preparing your stores for this evolution?

I believe that traditional kirana stores and modern retail chains will continue to coexist, each fulfilling distinct customer needs. Kirana stores excel in local convenience and personalised service, while modern chains provide variety, consistency, and quality assurance. At Grocery 4U, we’re bridging these worlds by maintaining strong ties with local suppliers and employing local staff to retain a communityorientated approach. Simultaneously, we’re integrating technology to provide a modern shopping experience. Our franchise model also empowers kirana store owners to modernise their operations while preserving their local identity, ensuring they thrive alongside larger retail chains.
