Building Governance as a Competitive Advantage
Dinesh Kumar G
Vice President Legal
Everrenew Energy Private Limited
Legal leadership is central to renewable energy’s rapid evolution, where navigating regulatory complexity, land acquisition and evacuation approvals, and finalising intricate, high-value EPC and project contracts within exceptionally short timelines, alongside hybrid infrastructure projects, demands more than technical expertise. It requires foresight, judgement, and the ability to align diverse stakeholders. Dinesh Kumar G, Vice President – Legal at Everrenew Energy Private Limited, Reflecting on his early advocacy days, Dinesh found an unexpected parallel with renewable energy: success relies not just on expertise but on building conviction and consensus. Whether before a judicial bench or a corporate board, the challenge lies in uniting diverse perspectives around a shared purpose. This insight shapes his leadership style today—strategically clear, empathetic in execution, and focused on solutions that balance commercial ambition with long-term impact. Dinesh has built Everrenew’s compliance and legal framework from scratch, establishing the company as a market leader in end-to-end renewable energy solutions, including wind and solar power, energy smart meters, wind resource assessments, and mega electrical infrastructure. His approach embeds a culture where teams think lawfully, act ethically, and move decisively. Looking ahead, he is transforming Everrenew’s legal function into a strategic catalyst that anticipates risks, accelerates decisions, and strengthens trust across every partnership. Speaking with TradeFlock, Dinesh shares his journey and more.
What unexpected connection between law and renewable energy influences your leadership today?
What surprised me most was how closely my early advocacy experience mirrors the renewable energy journey. In both, success depends not just on technical expertise but on building conviction and aligning diverse perspectives toward a common goal, whether before a bench or a board. This realisation has fundamentally shaped my leadership style. Today, I focus on clarity in strategy, empathy in execution, and solutions that balance commercial ambition with long-term impact. Leading in renewable energy is as much about guiding people and fostering consensus as it is about managing legal and regulatory complexity.
Which personal win during Everrenew’s compliance setup mattered most, and why?
One moment that truly stood out was when a project lead, almost in passing, said, “We checked the framework before finalising this.” That small comment felt like a victory; it revealed that compliance had shifted from a checklist to a mindset. This was more than a legal victory for me; it indicated that longlasting legal practices could become part of culture. At Everrenew, building the compliance framework from scratch wasn’t just about drafting perfect clauses; it was about empowering teams to think lawfully, act ethically, and make swift decisions with confidence. That moment encapsulated my vision: when legal guidance becomes instinctive, it fosters both organisational efficiency and sustainable, responsible growth.
What’s your bold vision for Everrenew, and what drives it?
My audacious goal is to transform Everrenew’s legal function into a true strategic catalyst, one that not only anticipates risks but also accelerates decisions and builds trust across every partnership. I envision legal moving in step with the business, shaping strategy rather than simply following it. In a sector defined by constant change, our edge will come from foresight, not just compliance. The ambition is to make governance a competitive advantage, where robust legal foundations empower bold, confident business moves. Personally, I am driven by the belief that legal excellence and business agility can coexist, creating sustainable progress. The next frontier lies in proving that strong legal stewardship can actively enable innovation, growth, and lasting impact.
How has your cross-industry experience honed your ability to uncover hidden clauses and manage risk?
Before moving into renewable energy, my time in the thermal power sector taught me a vital lesson: the most significant risks often lie in what isn’t written. A defining moment came during a greenfield solar EPC project. The contract tied milestone payments to vague “government approvals” but didn’t specify which ones or account for phased commissioning. I realised that even a single overlooked approval could trigger cascading penalties and financing risks. By proactively clarifying approvals, linking payments to phased milestones, and addressing conditional requirements upfront, we mitigated multi-milliondollar exposure. That experience reshaped how I approach contracts and opportunities. I now read for hidden, systemic risks, not just the words on the page. It’s a lens that blends caution with insight, seeing opportunity and risk as two sides of the same coin. This perspective guides every decision I make, ensuring legal strategy protects value while enabling bold, informed business moves.
How do you overcome complex compliance challenges while empowering your team?
One of the toughest challenges in renewable energy was creating a unified compliance culture across states, each with different laws and operational realities. Rigid reporting wasn’t working, so we shifted to dialogue-driven sessions, encouraging teams to share challenges openly. The change was immediate—engagement soared, understanding deepened, and teams started proposing their own innovations, including digital tracking tools. This experience reinforced a key principle: compliance thrives when humanised. Empower people first, and the systems follow. For me, sustainable compliance is more than just about rules; it’s about building a culture where teams take ownership, act responsibly, and drive both ethical and operational excellence.
