Rising from the role of Assistant Manager to Senior Vice President and Head of Legal & Regulatory, Niraj has transformed the perception of corporate law from a rule-enforcing function into a strategic partner that empowers decision-making and drives sustainable growth.
At the heart of his leadership is the ability to translate complex legal and regulatory frameworks into actionable insights that business leaders can trust. He navigates diverse stakeholders with influence rather than authority, maintains composure during high-pressure situations, and consistently balances risk mitigation with strategic opportunity. For him, the essence of corporate law is not about overwhelming stakeholders with caution but about creating an environment where the organisation feels protected, informed, and empowered. Ethical, strategic, and forward-looking, Niraj stands out as a trusted advisor whose guidance strengthens governance, enables growth, and ensures that Sapphire Foods operates with both confidence and integrity. He discusses more about himself in this exclusive interview with TradeFlock.
What is your approach to leading and developing your legal team?
My leadership style is anchored in empathy, accountability, courage, and enablement, fostering a culture where the team feels supported, trusted, and empowered. As an empathic empowerment leader, I focus on listening deeply, recognising individual strengths, and making principled decisions that balance integrity with organisational goals. Leading by example is key, shaping the professional standards my team carries forward. I set clear expectations, hold the team accountable, and provide autonomy, knowledge, and opportunities to excel, something that is critical in legal & regulatory functions where ethical judgement and collaborative problem-solving drive outcomes.
The results speak for themselves: a high-performing, 12-member team with 100% diversity, near-zero attrition over nine years, and consistently top Gallup scores. This reflects a culture of trust, ownership, and empowerment that defines our team’s distinct edge.
Can you share a contribution that made a meaningful impact at your company?
In many corporates, the legal & regulatory function is often perceived as a disabler. When I joined Sapphire a decade ago, a PE-funded start-up with a diverse legacy culture, I had the opportunity to build the function from scratch. I restructured the team, brought in the right talent, and established robust systems and processes.
Today, I lead a highly capable, diverse, and stable team that has managed all legal and regulatory challenges seamlessly for over nine years. Recognised as true enablers across functions, the team drives efficiency, cost savings, and organisational risk mitigation, making a lasting impact on the company’s growth.
What advice would you give junior lawyers facing these issues?
Do the groundwork thoroughly; it builds the foundation for effective leadership. Have the courage to take a firm stand when needed, balancing compassion with assertiveness. Remember, your role isn’t just to defend the company but to build trust, uphold integrity, and create a transparent, safe environment. Mastering this balance makes you a trusted advisor and respected leader.
How did you navigate the shift from telecommunications to the food sector?
While every industry brings its own challenges, the core demands of the legal & regulatory function—legal expertise, solution-orientated thinking, and ownership of complex issues—remain consistent. Over my career, I have navigated telecom, retail, and food, each shaping my approach in distinct ways.In Telecom, particularly in Jammu & Kashmir in 2006, the stakes were exceptionally high. Airtel faced potential misuse by extremist elements, requiring vigilance, coordination, and strategic legal interventions. Successfully addressing these risks ensured a safer, more secure operating environment for the business. In retail, I guided the transformation of challenging properties into viable hypermarket locations, resolving land disputes, licensing hurdles, and negotiating contracts effectively.Transitioning to the food sector, with its direct customer interface, introduced high-pressure scenarios, from vexatious litigation to malafide consumer claims. Over the past decade, I have managed numerous such matters, each offering critical learning. These experiences across industries have strengthened my ability to lead legal & regulatory functions with resilience, foresight, and a proactive problem-solving mindset. They have reinforced the importance of balancing legal prudence with business enablement, ultimately shaping me into a trusted advisor who drives compliance and growth simultaneously.
What’s your strategy for handling quality and false-claim disputes?
While product mislabelling and false claims pose significant legal risks, a rising challenge in the food and service sector is the volume of consumer complaints around quality and hygiene. These situations demand not only legal precision but also emotional intelligence, swift action, and sound judgement. My approach is empathetic first, assertive later, addressing grievances with transparency, respect, and fairness, understanding that the customer’s perception often shapes reality.Â
For vexatious or habitual complainants, responses must be firm, professional, and fact-based. I mentor aspiring legal professionals to balance empathy with assertiveness, protecting the brand while upholding ethical standards. This approach safeguards the organisation, reinforces integrity, and models how legal teams can be both principled and enabling in high-pressure, customer-facing scenarios.
