Redefining Legal Practice for a Borderless Business World

Devina Das

Founder,

That Unconventional Lawyer

Devina Das didn’t wait for tradition to catch up. Straight out of law school, she took a road less travelled—choosing not to join a law firm or courtroom practice, but instead building a remote-first legal advisory model that works at the speed of business. As the Founder of That Unconventional Lawyer (TUL), Devina has created a legal practice that is lean, global, and outcomes-driven. Her work focuses on what many traditional legal setups often miss: contract structuring tailored to early-stage businesses, cross-border deal facilitation, and building legal operations from scratch. She collaborates directly with founders, solo attorneys, and international teams—offering legal clarity and alignment without the bureaucracy. TUL today supports clients across 16+ countries, including the U.S., U.K., UAE, Japan, and Canada, delivering services such as litigation support, contract drafting, paralegal assistance, and research. No physical office. No waiting for a docket. Just purpose-built legal support designed for today’s business challenges. The name That Unconventional Lawyer wasn’t a marketing move—it was a mindset. Devina’s approach rejects legal gatekeeping in favour of accessibility, adaptability, and value. She brings not just legal knowledge, but operational insight and business empathy to every engagement. As an international legal advisor and legal author, Devina continues to challenge norms and redefine what it means to practice law in a borderless, digital-first world, making her one of the most quietly disruptive voices in the modern legal landscape. Devina discusses more about her work with TradeFlock in this exclusive interview

"I start by listening—really listening —not just to what clients say they want but to where they’re stuck operationally, contractually, or commercially."

What was the first international client experience that made you feel, “Yes, this is working”?

It started with a legal research assignment from a New York–based attorney. At the time, it was just me and one team member working on a freelance basis. We made sure to keep the quality at par with thorough research, proper presentation, and timely delivery. The attorney liked our report and kept sending follow-on tasks. That consistency built the first layer of trust. Soon after, a logistics company from Dubai approached us to review and draft a commercial contract. That turned into multiple agreements across jurisdictions and, eventually, strategic advisory support. Those two early engagements—one litigationfocused, the other transactional—validated the model. They proved that high-calibre legal work could be delivered remotely, collaboratively, and without a traditional firm structure. That’s when I knew TUL had something worth scaling

How do you identify what legal services the market truly needs versus what it’s traditionally used to?

I start by listening—really listening—not just to what clients say they want but to where they’re stuck operationally, contractually, or commercially. Often, what they ask for reflects what they’ve seen before; what they need is structure that lets them move faster, protect IP, or scale across jurisdictions. At TUL, we don’t replicate legal processes—we develop frameworks that fit the way modern businesses actually run. That means spotting issues: cross-border vendor delays, investor hold-ups due to missing compliance, and founders overwhelmed by documentation. We then build legal solutions forward, not backwards from precedent.

What’s one non-legal passion that recharges and inspires you?

I love foreign language films. I love the unfamiliar dialogue and how much you can pick up about a culture through its storytelling. It’s also what sparked my interest in learning new languages—there’s something about decoding meaning across contexts that feels surprisingly close to what I do in law.

What lessons from your early roles, like LawSikho and internships, proved unexpectedly vital in your journey as a legal entrepreneur?

At LawSikho, I learnt a lot about how a legal ed-tech business actually runs—from operations and product building to how important it is to understand the needs of both existing and potential clients. That experience taught me that legal services aren’t just about delivery—they’re about listening, identifying gaps, and solving real problems. During my early internships, especially with solo attorneys, I saw firsthand how much client experience matters. These lawyers were excellent at drafting and research, but they also took time to greet their clients, listen without interrupting, and explain things with clarity. That level of empathy and communication inspired me. Both experiences shaped the way I built That Unconventional Lawyer: with a focus on relevance and legal solutions that actually fit how people and businesses work.

How can young lawyers build a strong online identity like yours?

Be active. Show up. And don’t box yourself in. Too many lawyers treat their profession as the whole picture—but if you want to build a strong online presence, you need to think beyond just being a lawyer. You’re also a professional offering a service, and that means thinking like a business owner. Understand how to communicate your value, how to market your skills, and how to position yourself in a way that connects with real-world needs. Don’t be afraid to talk about what you’re learning, how you’re growing, or the kind of work you’re drawn to. That’s how people find you—and remember you. A strong online identity isn’t built overnight, but it’s absolutely worth investing in.
