Leading Finance Beyond Numbers
Marianna Filippopoulou
Finance Director
Ticketmaster Sport
If there’s one thread that defines Marianna Filippopoulou’s journey at Ticketmaster Sport, it’s her instinctive ability to lead through change. From her early days as a financial controller to her current role as finance director, she has consistently reimagined what finance can enable for a business, especially in an era where technology evolves faster than most organisations can adapt. Today, her role is a careful balancing act: embracing AI and emerging technologies while ensuring the people behind the systems feel supported, empowered, and prepared for the future. This is why Marianna champions continuous upskilling, stronger data governance, and simpler, smarter financial processes. For her, innovation is meaningful only when it uplifts teams, strengthens decision making, and enhances the human side of work. Yet Marianna’s influence extends far beyond systems and structures. Her leadership spans financial restructuring, cost intelligence, profitability assessments, process engineering, reporting transformation, and cross-functional financial strategy. She thrives in complexity, finding patterns where others see roadblocks, and designing solutions that make the organisation more resilient and forward-looking. What truly sets her apart is the way she leads—with optimism, strategic clarity, and unwavering integrity. She communicates with purpose, negotiates with empathy, and influences with credibility built over years of dependable decision-making. Her intercultural fluency allows her to connect across diverse teams, while her analytical mindset serves as a compass during periods of transition. More than a finance leader, Marianna is a transformation guide—someone who ensures Ticketmaster Sport navigates the future with confidence, capability, and a distinctly human heartbeat. Talking with TradeFlock, she shares her secret sauce, learning throughout her journey and her strategies that made an impact.
Across multiple countries, what made building one finance system the hardest, and how did you tackle it?
The most challenging part was aligning different working styles, local practices, and expectations across regions. Finance may share a universal language of numbers, but the processes behind those numbers differ widely from country to country. I approached this by focusing on our common ground: our shared financial principles, existing strong frameworks, and the efficiencies we could unlock together. By building on what already worked, encouraging open collaboration, and maintaining clear communication, we were able to harmonise processes and create a unified system that felt practical, respectful of local nuances, and effective for everyone involved.
How is technology strengthening security, privacy, and compliance in finance?
Security, data privacy, and compliance are central to everything we do at Ticketmaster. In my role as Finance Director, I rely on expert global teams who guide the adoption of cutting-edge technologies and industry best practices. Their support allows me to focus on delivering results in the finance function with assurance that our systems are protected. Continuous investment and collaboration ensure our processes remain secure, compliant, and ready to evolve with the digital landscape.
Which financial or technological trends will reshape finance directors by 2030?
The Finance Director of 2030 will look very different from today. Automation of routine tasks will allow leaders to spend more time on strategy, forecasting, and guiding business direction. AI and real-time analytics will transform data into actionable insights, requiring finance leaders to interpret complex information with clarity and foresight. Sustainability and governance will take on greater importance, with finance directors driving ESG reporting, transparency, and longterm value creation. Success in the future will depend not only on technical and analytical expertise but also on the ability to influence, inspire, and make decisions that balance financial performance with people and planet.
What key lessons from your journey would you pass on to future leaders?
My journey has taught me the value of curiosity, adaptability, and embracing every opportunity. Starting in roles such as cashier and customer service gave me a profound understanding of how every part of a business operates and the people who make it run. Those early experiences shaped the leader I am today. I’ve learnt to see challenges as opportunities to grow, to persevere even when progress is slow, and to commit to continuous learning. Above all, loving what you do matters. It fuels resilience and motivates others. If I were to pass on one lesson to the next generation of leaders, it would be this: embrace every experience, remain a lifelong learner, and lead with empathy, curiosity, and genuine passion. These qualities, more than any technical skill, define impactful leadership.
