In a market where Indian equity investors face unprecedented volatility and complex growth opportunities, the challenge is not just preserving capital but consistently generating sustainable returns. At the heart of this transformation is Naveen Kulkarni, Chief Investment Officer and EVP at Axis Securities. Over the past five years, he has grown equity assets under management from a modest ₹73 crores to an impressive ₹5,000 crores. His team implements diverse strategies across Value, Growth, Special Situations, and Income, all while maintaining client trust and delivering consistent profitability. Kulkarni’s rise spans more than two decades. He co-headed research at PhillipCapital, leading a 26-member analyst team and driving a fourfold increase in research-led broking revenues through a strong focus on differentiated insights and client engagement, which led to significant improvement in research ranking across top institutions. At Reliance Securities, he scaled both institutional and retail research, launching innovative products and strengthening equity revenue streams. Earlier, as Zonal Head at Reliance Communications, he spearheaded revenue growth across key markets. A CFA and FRM charterholder, he has also pioneered quantitative-based investment strategies that leverage AI, machine learning, and Smart Beta frameworks, redefining the research and investment decision-making process. In an exclusive TradeFlock interview, Kulkarni shares his career insights, investment philosophy, and strategies for navigating India’s evolving financial markets.
Which career transitions challenged you most, and what lessons guide you today?
Throughout my career, spanning over two decades, I have held diverse roles that have significantly shaped my professional outlook. I began my career in sales and business development, where I learned the importance of persistence and people skills, before transitioning into research and ultimately portfolio management. Each transition brought its own challenges and invaluable growth opportunities. A defining phase of my career was my time as a sell-side analyst at PhillipCapital, where I covered multiple sectors, including Telecom, Consumer, Media, and Equity Strategy. Balancing research depth with delivering differentiated insights to clients was demanding but deeply rewarding. That period taught me the importance of focus, discipline, and consistent execution. It also humbled me, showing that success is not about solving every problem, but rather identifying the right ones to focus on the issues that truly make a difference. This clarity of purpose continues to guide my priorities and long-term value creation.
How do you approach tough decisions, and what principles guide you?
Some of the toughest moments in my career have come when I had to make difficult decisions that involved starting a new business strategy by taking on significant costs or enforcing sharp reductions. These choices are never easy because they affect people and the trust we have built over time. I have always focused on the long-term value that such decisions create for the organisation and all stakeholders. Trust is central; it takes years to build but can disappear in moments. Over time, I have learned that transparency, fairness, and an unwavering focus on long-term value are essential for sustaining relationships and defining leadership. These principles are not just professional guidelines; they are values I strive to live by every day.
How do you stay intellectually curious and continue learning beyond finance?
Over the years, I have noticed my attention span has shortened, yet my passion for learning has remained strong. Podcasts, especially during travel, have become an important part of this journey, offering moments for reflection and exploration. Many great books are now accessible on platforms like Audible, making knowledge more easily accessible than ever. I have also developed a deep interest in psychology, science, and spirituality, which help connect the dots between human behaviour, the way the world works, and what gives meaning to our actions. Learning has evolved to be about curiosity, staying open to new ideas, and continuous evolution, rather than simply completing books or courses.
Where do you see the biggest opportunities or inefficiencies in Indian markets that many overlook?
Indian equity markets have become significantly more efficient over the past decade; however, active fund management remains crucial, as India remains a complex market and achieving long-term profitability remains challenging. The most compelling opportunities lie with high-quality promoters who possess a clear long-term vision and a proven commitment to shareholder value. These businesses tend to compound value steadily, even amid shortterm fluctuations. Another emerging area is India’s derivatives market, offering potential for innovative products that complement traditional fixed-income investments.
“Over time, I have learned that transparency, fairness, and an unwavering focus on long-term value are essential for sustaining relationships and defining leadership."
How do you integrate AI and alternative data with human judgment in your PMS process?
Axis Securities was among the early adopters of factor-based investing, blending quantitative techniques and machine learning models for stock selection and portfolio construction. AI complements human judgment rather than replacing it, though its use is still evolving and we are only scratching the surface of its potential. Globally, AI is transforming equity research, and India is steadily moving in that direction. The challenge lies in ensuring highquality, consistent data, but when combined with human insight and alternative data, this synergy will define the next phase of intelligent and responsible investing. Being part of this journey has opened new ways of thinking about markets where technology amplifies human insight.
