In an era where education is rapidly transforming—driven by digital disruption, evolving industry demands, and an urgent need for holistic, future-ready learning—academic institutions face the dual challenge of staying relevant while nurturing innovation. As the higher education landscape grapples with issues like outdated curricula, skill mismatches, and declining student engagement, the role of visionary academic leadership has never been more critical. It is within this dynamic and high-stakes environment that leaders like Dr. Prabhat Ranjan emerge—not just as administrators but as catalysts of transformation.

I’ve never seen science and education as separate. Both are about exploration. Both are about making life better.

Dr. Prabhat Ranjan is Founder and Former Vice Chancellor, D Y Patil International University, Akurdi, Pune and Chairman(Research, Innovation and International Affairs) of Dr D Y Patil Pratishthan. Leveraging decades of experience across science, technology, and policy, he is redefining how institutions navigate change. Having served as the founder Vice Chancellor of D Y Patil International University for 7 years, he brought a unique confluence of academic rigour and futuristic thinking. Before this, he led India’s premier technology think tank, TIFAC, under the Department of Science and Technology, where he shaped national innovation strategies including documents such as Technology Vision 2035. From pioneering work in nuclear fusion research and embedded systems to contributing to India’s Chandrayaan-II mission and developing assistive technologies for the differentlyabled, Dr. Ranjan’s journey reflects a rare blend of scientific excellence and deep social consciousness. His academic tenures at DA-IICT and leadership roles in prestigious institutions like IIASA, NID, and CMIT further showcase his versatility and commitment to shaping minds and systems. In an exclusive interview with TradeFlock, Dr. Prabhat Ranjan shares his insights on the evolving education ecosystem, the need for innovation-driven leadership, and his vision for building universities of the future.

How did your work on lunar water detection and wildlife tracking shape your approach to education?

It’s interesting—working on projects as diverse as lunar water detection and wildlife tracking taught me how powerful interdisciplinary, hands-on learning can be. Those experiences shaped my approach at DYPIU, where we emphasize practical, project-based education. As I often say, “Bridging theory and real-world application is the key to preparing students for what’s ahead.” Initiatives like our ‘Lab in a Bag’ and digital fabrication labs reflect that vision, making learning accessible, even during challenges like the pandemic.

How did you make D Y Patil International University futureready?

It’s frustrating to see students prepared for yesterday’s world—that’s something I’ve always wanted to change. At DYPIU, we constantly evolve our curriculum to stay ahead, bringing in cutting-edge fields like AI, data analytics, and digital fabrication. Our introduction of a flexible multi track system was to take care of fast technological evolution. “Flexibility, relevance, and realworld focus are what make education future ready,” and that’s exactly what we aim for with personalised learning paths and an emphasis on skills that truly matter.

What mindset shift is needed to embrace the future of education?

I’ve always felt that the future belongs to those who stay curious. At DYPIU, we’re helping students and faculty shift from a fixed mindset to one that thrives on growth and adaptability

Learning isn't a destination it's a mindset

and we’re building that through mentorship, ongoing development, and a culture that encourages constant evolution.

How do you balance structure and innovation in academia?

I’ve always seen structure and innovation as two sides of the same coin—you need one to push the other forward. At DYPIU, we built flexibility into the system without losing academic depth. When we launched our CSE program in 2019 around emerging tech, it sparked change beyond our campus. “Maintaining structure while continuously innovating is how we future-proof education”—and that’s the balance I strive for every day.

How are you using AI and emerging tech to enhance student learning?

It all starts with a simple idea: no two students learn the same way. That’s why at DYPIU, we’re using AI to adapt content in real-time, AR/VR to create immersive experiences, and innovations like our ‘Lab in a Bag’ to turn theory into hands-on learning. “When learning becomes personal, it becomes powerful”,—and that’s the future we’re committed to shaping.

What keeps you intellectually curious beyond research and education?

Curiosity doesn’t switch off when I leave the lab or classroom—it just finds new outlets. I’ve spent over 15 years developing tech for people with severe disabilities, and “nothing fuels me more than seeing technology bring a genuine smile to someone’s face.” Lately, I’ve been exploring the creative side of generative AI—writing bedtime stories, making song videos in my voice, even podcasting. Learning something new and pushing boundaries keeps me energised, always. My bed is where I get the chance to explore new things and keep my curiosity alive.
