Where Disciplines Intersect, Leadership Emerges
Rathish Mani
Director-Operations
Digital Realty
For Rathish Mani, Director of Operations at Digital Realty, leadership has never been about staying within the boundaries of a single discipline. It’s about seeing the bigger picture—connecting engineering with operations, aligning systems with strategy, and putting people at the heart of everything. His career is a study in how integration, not isolation, drives excellence. With a background in engineering and extensive experience across the information technology and services sector, Rathish has built a reputation as a calm, precise, and forward-thinking operator. His domain expertise spans operations and maintenance, facility management, and large-scale data centre environments, each layer reinforcing the other to deliver operational synergy. What truly defines his leadership journey, however, is his ability to bring cross-functional teams together under a common purpose. From early milestones to complex infrastructure rollouts, Rathish has led with clarity, fostering a culture built on trust, transparency, and high performance. He believes that when communication is open and ownership is shared, even the most complex environments can run with simplicity and speed. At Digital Realty, he is at the helm of operations that form the backbone of global digital infrastructure. He seamlessly blends emerging technologies with established best practices to ensure systems remain robust, scalable, and sustainable. But more than just running operations in the Asia Pacific, he shapes them by continuously evolving them to meet the demands of a hyperconnected world. Rathish’s leadership exemplifies a modern truth: when disciplines intersect, possibilities expand. And in that intersection, he has found the space to build, lead, and transform. How? Let’s read here.
Embrace new technologies with curiosity, remain agile in the face of change, and never lose sight of the broader mission.
What major challenges have you faced in data centre operations, and how did you overcome them?
One of the biggest challenges in data centre operations has been ensuring uninterrupted high availability. To address this, we cultivated a culture of proactive monitoring and continuous upskilling. Our teams are empowered through regular training, while robust incident response protocols and drills have helped Digital Realty maintain over a decade of five nines uptime—a benchmark of operational excellence. Scaling sustainably has been another important focus. As our footprint expanded, we integrated energy-efficient technologies and advanced cooling systems to balance growth with environmental stewardship. These measures aren’t just technical solutions; they reflect our long-term commitment to responsible operations. Our 2024 Impact Report highlights key milestones: 1.9 million sq. ft. of space certified under sustainable building standards, contributing to 15 million sq. ft. globally; over 42,400 MWh of energy savings through efficiency initiatives; and a 14% reduction in water use intensity across our North American colocation portfolio. These outcomes reinforce our vision—resilient, future-ready infrastructure built responsibly.
How do you ensure resilience and preparedness for unexpected outages in always-on data centre environments?
In data centre operations, preparedness is the cornerstone of resilience. We leverage proactive monitoring and advanced alert systems to identify and respond to issues early, while our infrastructure is designed with built-in redundancy and seamless failover. Equally important is team readiness; we conduct regular drills and continuous training to ensure swift, coordinated responses. This integrated approach helps us maintain uninterrupted operations, even in the face of unexpected challenges.
How do you align data centre operational efficiency with Singapore’s energy and sustainability targets?
In Singapore, aligning our data centre operations with the country’s sustainability priorities is both a responsibility and an opportunity. We achieve this through AI-powered energy management via Apollo, our in-house AI platform, along with on-site solar systems and the use of NEWater for efficient cooling. We actively track key metrics like power usage effectiveness (PUE) and water usage effectiveness (WUE) to drive continuous improvement. Our data centres run on renewable energy and are certified under BCA Green Mark and SS564 standards. Sustainability is embedded in every decision we make, helping us reduce our carbon footprint while supporting national goals and delivering operational excellence across our facilities.
How are data centre operations in Singapore evolving with emerging trends like edge computing, AI workloads, and sustainable infrastructure?
The future of data centre operations in Singapore is shaped by innovation, intelligence, and sustainability. With edge computing on the rise, operations will become more decentralised, bringing compute closer to users for faster, more responsive services. The growth of AI workloads will drive adoption of high-performance hardware like GPUs and TPUs, along with AI-optimised cooling. Green data centres will lead this evolution, integrating renewable energy and sustainable design to align with Singapore’s climate goals. Together, these trends are powering a smarter, greener digital future
What’s your core leadership philosophy, and how should future data centre leaders prepare for the evolving industry?
“Empower teams, foster innovation, and pursue operational excellence through continuous learning and resilience.” That’s the essence of my leadership philosophy. For aspiring leaders in data centre operations, my advice is to focus on building strong, collaborative teams that balance deep technical expertise with creative problem-solving. Embrace new technologies with curiosity, remain agile in the face of change, and never lose sight of the broader mission. Most importantly, prioritise people, because leadership is ultimately about enabling others to succeed. When trust, accountability, and innovation are embedded in your culture, exceptional performance naturally follows.
