ChatGPT Faced Global Outage: What Is The Reason?

OpenAI’s chatbot ChatGPT faced a global outage on Thursday night. Thousands of platform users reported issues starting around 4:30 a.m. IST (6 p.m. Eastern Time) and peaking around 5:30 a.m. IST (7 p.m. ET). According to the platform Down Detector, which records such outages via user reports, the ChatGPT received around 373 complaints. Many other OpenAI services were also affected; however, ChatGPT faced the most outages. Down Detector showed 75% of the reports were against the chatbot, 15% for the website, and 10% for the app.

OpenAI addressed the issue on social media, stating, “We’re facing an outage right now. We have identified the issue and are working to roll out a fix. Sorry, and we will keep you updated.” Before this, ChatGPT went down for 30 minutes last month, impacting around 19,000 users, for which OpenAI CEO Sam Altman apologised on X.

This outage triggered a massive social media posting, with users flocking to X to check if others were facing the same issue. ChatGPT users commented, “I pay $20 a month just for it to not work when I have an assignment due tonight; thanks.” “If I keep refreshing the page, will that speed things up?” “Thank you, because I could not correct my sentence, lol.” Some other users asked how long the chatbot will remain down.

This ChatGPT outage might be caused by a major glitch, which might be in the server.  Currently, the issue has been resolved; however, there was a black screen on the ChatGPT website with the statement that the company is working to fix the issue.
