The Discipline Behind Diamond Leadership
Chetan Kumar Mehta
Chairman & Managing Director
Laxmi Imperial Pvt. Ltd.
In the diamond industry, trust is not built through grand gestures but is earned in the smallest details, the unseen verifications, and the discipline behind every decision. For Chetan Kumar Mehta, Chairman & Managing Director of Laxmi Diamonds – Laxmi Imperial Private Limited, this principle has shaped a 19-year journey defined by precision, accountability, and quiet but decisive evolution.
His career has been driven by depth, not designation. From strengthening operational frameworks and quality benchmarks to reinforcing compliance and audit integrity, Chetan has consistently focused on the systems that safeguard credibility in a high-value, trust-led sector. His impact lies in building processes that don’t just deliver efficiency but withstand scrutiny.
A defining early setback, rooted in acting on incomplete information, reshaped his leadership philosophy. It instilled a non-negotiable discipline: validate before acting and align before executing. Today, Chetan’s decision-making reflects structured thinking, risk awareness, and absolute clarity, where speed never compromises certainty.
As the industry evolves towards greater transparency, traceability, and personalisation, Chetan is steering the organisation with measured agility. This includes integrating technology, tightening cross-functional alignment, and embedding a culture that places the customer at the centre of every decision.
In this exclusive interview with TradeFlock, Chetan unpacks the mindset behind his journey, the lessons that redefined his leadership, and how he is building a future-ready organisation in an industry where trust remains the ultimate currency.
How would you define your 19-year journey and key milestones?
Over the past 19 years in the diamond industry, my professional journey has been both enriching and transformative. It has been a path of continuous learning, adaptability, and growth, allowing me to understand the business across multiple dimensions, right from operations and quality standards to compliance and stakeholder management.
One of the defining aspects of my journey has been my ability to take on responsibilities beyond routine functions, contributing to organisational development and process improvements. I have been actively involved in implementing best practices, ensuring adherence to industry standards, and supporting audit and compliance requirements, which are critical in maintaining credibility in the diamond jewellery manufacturing sector.
Among the key milestones, I would highlight my contributions towards strengthening operational efficiency, successfully handling important audits and certifications, and building strong coordination between internal teams and external partners. Additionally, being entrusted with critical responsibilities and consistently delivering within tight timelines has been particularly rewarding.
Overall, my journey reflects a strong commitment to professionalism, integrity, and continuous improvement.
What will be the biggest disruption in the diamond sector, and how are you preparing for it?
I believe there is no real disruption in the diamond journey, only evolving opportunities. Today’s customers are more informed and value-driven, placing equal importance on trust and the story behind the product. We see this shift as an opportunity to strengthen our focus on natural diamonds while remaining open to emerging segments. At the same time, we are investing in technology and traceability to enhance transparency and align with evolving consumer expectations.
How do you balance legacy thinking, professional management, and technology?
Balancing legacy thinking with professional management has been a key part of my journey. Legacy brings values like trust, relationships, and craftsmanship, while professional management adds structure, scalability, and data-driven decision-making. The goal is to integrate both, not replace one with the other.
In practice, I preserve traditional strengths while introducing standardised processes, clear documentation, and performance metrics to build a more transparent and sustainable system.
Technology plays a central role as a bridge between the two, enabling visibility, traceability, and efficiency through ERP systems, digital tracking, and analytics. At the same time, I focus on driving adoption through training, ensuring teams see technology as an enabler of growth and consistency.

What was your most expensive mistake, and how did it change your decision-making?
One of the most expensive mistakes in my career was underestimating the importance of thorough verification in a time-sensitive situation. Early on, I relied on assumptions and partial information to move quickly, which led to rework, added costs, and delays.
While challenging, it became a turning point. It fundamentally changed my approach. I no longer prioritise speed over accuracy. Instead, I focus on structured validation, clear communication, and involving the right stakeholders.
This experience instilled a strong discipline around risk assessment and accountability. Today, every decision is backed by data, compliance checks, and contingency planning.
How are you adapting to rapidly changing customer preferences?
Customer preferences in the diamond industry are evolving rapidly, driven by changing lifestyles, digital influence, and growing awareness around quality, sustainability, and personalisation. To stay relevant, I focus on both personal adaptability and organisational agility.
At a personal level, I continuously stay updated on market trends, customer expectations, and emerging technologies. Engaging closely with teams, clients, and industry insights helps me understand shifting demands, whether for certified products, traceability, or customised designs.
From an organisational standpoint, I emphasise flexibility and responsiveness by strengthening coordination between sales, production, and quality teams to ensure faster turnaround and better alignment with customer needs. We also prioritise high standards of compliance and transparency.
Equally important is fostering a customer-centric mindset across the organisation, ensuring every function contributes to delivering value, experience, and trust, not just a product.
