A certified emotional intelligence coach, she also champions a people-centred approach to leadership grounded in trust, collaboration, and shared purpose.Â
In an exclusive conversation with TradeFlock, Deema shares insights from her cross-industry journey, the leadership lessons that shaped her career, and her evolving perspective on success, impact, and value creation.Â
What was the most transformative transition of your career?
Every transition throughout my career has required a degree of reinvention. Each industry came with its own dynamics, stakeholders, challenges, and measures of success, demanding a willingness to learn quickly and adapt. One of the most defining transitions was moving from banking into aviation and airport commercial management. It was a significant shift into a highly regulated industry where security, safety, and operational efficiency always took precedence. I quickly realised that commercial success had to create value for the entire airport ecosystem.Â
Increasing non-aeronautical revenue was not simply about generating income. It enabled greater investment in operations, enhanced the passenger experience, and strengthened stakeholder engagement. That experience also reinforced the importance of understanding how different parts of an organisation work together.Â
More importantly, it shaped my leadership philosophy. I learned that effective leadership is about connecting perspectives, aligning diverse stakeholders around a common objective, and helping people see their role in a larger vision. While industries may change, the principles of leadership remain consistent. Building alignment, fostering shared ownership, and creating value for all stakeholders continue to guide how I lead today.Â
What role have trust and professional relationships played in your career?
Relationships have been one of the most valuable assets throughout my career. Many opportunities came from years of building trust, delivering on commitments, and maintaining authentic professional connections.Â
I have never viewed networking as collecting contacts. For me, it is about building genuine relationships. Trust compounds over time and often becomes a leader’s most valuable currency.Â
My experience as an emotional intelligence coach reinforced a simple lesson: people may forget a transaction, but they rarely forget how you made them feel.Â
Can you share a defining pressure moment from your career and how you handled it?
One of the most defining pressure situations of my career was building a speciality ingredients and innovation business within a large global organisation while remaining accountable for commercial performance and financial discipline. It required learning an entirely new scientific language while creating new business models and growth opportunities.Â
What helped me navigate that challenge was a combination of transparency and resilience. I focused on open communication, aligning stakeholders around realistic expectations, and recognising progress along the way.Â
The experience reinforced an important leadership lesson: success does not always come from following the original plan. Some of our strongest outcomes emerged because we were willing to adapt, reframe opportunities, and respond quickly to new information. In innovation-driven environments, agility is not a sign of uncertainty. Rather a sign of maturity and effective leadership.Â
Which phase of your career had the greatest impact on your personal growth?
Looking back, one of the phases I remember most fondly was being part of a national project focused on enhancing the competitiveness of key sectors of the economy. As one of the youngest members of the team, I had the opportunity to learn directly from Harvard Business School Professor Michael Porter, which shaped my understanding of strategic thinking at a national level.Â
The experience deepened my appreciation for cross-sector collaboration, public-private partnerships, and the impact a small, committed team can achieve when united by a shared purpose.Â
What does success mean to you today, and what keeps you motivated?
Earlier in my career, success was closely tied to achievement and milestones. Today, my definition is more centred on impact. It is about creating value where others may not yet see it, helping people grow beyond what they thought possible, and building businesses that contribute positively to both the economy and society.Â
Across my journey, whether in airport operations or agricultural by-products, the thread has remained the same: identifying untapped value and bringing the right people together to unlock it effectively.Â
What continues to motivate me is the opportunity to keep learning while sharing what I have learnt. Ultimately, success is about leaving things better than I found them—whether that is a business, a team, an industry, or a community I work with.Â
