JioHotstar Domain Dispute: The Reality Of Free Transfer

The Dubai-based siblings Jainam and Jivika are transferring the Jiohostar.com domain it to Reliance at no cost. They shared on the website, “Today, we write to you with mixed emotions. Our journey with jiohotstar.com is coming to an end, a journey that started with a simple act of kindness to help a young developer from Delhi chase his dreams.”

The duo bought the JioHotstar domain from its Delhi-based developer, who registered this domain in 2023 when the Reliance Jio and Disney Hotstar merger worth ₹70,352 crores was mere speculation. After the merger was announced, the developer asked Reliance to fund his higher studies at Cambridge University in exchange for the domain. However, the Delhi-based developer refused to provide funds, which led to the JioHotstar domain being sold to Jainam and Jivika.

The RIL IP Legal team has approached the siblings, and they have decided to pass the ownership to them free of cost. The duo talked about the online rumours of a payment or deal involved. They clarified that this is purely a domain transfer from our side because we believe it could be useful for them, and no payment is involved.

After the merger, the new business will become India’s largest media and entertainment company, and its revenue will grow by around ₹26,000 crores.
