India inaugurated its new Consulate building in Shanghai on Sunday, making a significant move after 32 years in China’s major business hub.
The Shanghai consulate serves India’s business community in eastern China, home to major trade and business hubs such as Yiwu, where many Indian businesses are based. The giant new chancery building at the prominent centre in Changning District, covering 1436.63 sqm, is more than twice the size of the earlier one. It was inaugurated by the Indian Ambassador to China, Pradeep Kumar Rawat, and commenced full operations from its new premises on December 8.
India’s Ambassador to China, Mr Rawat, said, underscoring the importance of establishing a consulate for the first time since 1992. He also said that this will remain memorable as India and China celebrated the 75th year of diplomatic relations.
During the inauguration, over 400 guests attended, including members of the diplomatic community, representatives of the Shanghai Municipal Government, and members of the Indian diaspora from Shanghai, Hangzhou, Ningbo, Suzhou, Nanjing, Yiwu, Keqiao, and other cities.
Consul General Pratik Mathur reaffirms the consulate’s commitment to guaranteeing potential services for Indian nationals and Chinese partners. He thanked the Ministry of External Affairs and local Shanghai authorities for their immense support.

This expansion enables the consolidation of consular, commercial, cultural, and administrative functions in a one secure, modern space. Further, it will improve efficiency and strengthen public service delivery by offering seamless services to Indian nationals and Chinese partners.
