India’s Remarkable Growth In Renewable Energy

The CII International Energy Conference and Exhibition (IECE) 2024 took place on 17 December in New Delhi. Shri Pralhad Joshi, Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy, addressed this conference and shared that India is experiencing remarkable growth in renewable energy. He added that India is one of the world’s most promising nations in clean energy under Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s leadership and will emerge as the world’s renewable energy capital.

The Union Minister said that the country added around 15 GW of renewable energy capacity between April and November of the current financial year, 2024-2025, almost double the 7.54 GW added during the same period of last year. He further shared that India’s non-fossil fuel energy capacity has reached 214 GW, indicating a 14% increase compared to the same period of last year. In comparison, 2.3 GW was added in November 2024 alone.

The Minister repeated the Union Government’s commitment to achieving 500 GW of non-fossil fuel-based capacity by 2030. He highlighted that India is the only G20 nation to fulfil the Sustainable Development Goals made at the Paris Climate Change Summit 2015. Shri Joshi also shared that the faith in developing a Viksit Bharat by 2047, associated with sustainable and green growth, is driving India’s transformation in the energy sector.

While addressing the conference, Shri Joshi highlighted that the Union Government has taken steps to boost the RE sector growth. One of the steps is PLI (Production-Linked Incentive) to boost domestic manufacturing of solar panels and modules. Another initiative is to set up 50 solar parks with a cumulative capacity of 38 GW by 2025-26.
