The Indian Defence Ministry banned the import of 928 defence items, including subsystems, spares, line replacement units, and components of military equipment and platforms. The PSU defence takes this step to promote the “Make In India” movement. It is the fourth list of indigenisation components that have been placed under the import ban policy over the last two years. These defence items will come under the phase import ban between December 2023 and December 2029. The decision by the Indian Defense Ministry is also seen as a push for self-reliance in the defence manufacturing sector.
The list of 928 defence items also includes trainer aircraft, warships, fighter planes, and different types of ammunition. An import substitution value of these items is Rs 715 crore which the Defense Ministry discloses in a statement. The new positive indigenisation list is the continuation of the previous three lists, which contain 1,238 items and announced in December 2021, March 2022, and August 2022.
The official statement of the Indian Defense Ministry stated that “To promote ‘Atmanirbharta’ (self-reliance) in defence and minimise imports by the DPSUs, the defence ministry has approved the 4th positive indigenisation lists of 928 items strategically important LRUs/subsystems/spares and components, including high-end materials and spares, with an import substitution value worth ₹715 crores.”
