Apple Inc. could double its iPhone manufacturing in India with Donald Trump returning as US president. The company might grow production to over $30 billion annually over the next two years.
Apple Inc., the Cupertino-based tech giant, currently manufactures iPhones worth around $15-16 billion annually in India. The boost in iPhone production is expected because of Trump’s campaign promise to impose steep tariffs of 60 to 100% on Chinese imports.
Donald Trump imposed tariffs of up to 25% on Chinese goods during his previous presidential run between 2016 and 2020. A similar approach is expected from Trump in the second term, which would create 200,000 new job opportunities in the country with an iPhone production boost. It will also help grow India’s share in iPhone production from 12-14% to over 26%.
Neil Shah, the vice president at Counterpoint Research, confirmed that iPhone production is growing to more than $30 billion annually in India. However, many other experts warn that Indian suppliers must address cost efficiencies and policy uncertainties; otherwise, Apple might select other destinations for iPhone manufacturing.
Apple, the global giant, is partnered with three major manufacturing companies: Foxconn, Pegatron, and Tata Electronics, so its momentum in India is evident. Also, 70% of the local production is exported globally.
