Govt Sanctions ₹1.05 Lakh Crore Deals For Made In India Arms Boost

The Defence Acquisition Council Of India on Thursday authorised ₹1.05 lakh crore worth of local defence acquisitions. This is the first major step since Operation Sindoor highlighted India’s advanced precision strike capabilities. 

Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) led by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, approved Acceptance of Necessity (AON) for 10 key capital acquisition proposals, covering armoured including ARVs, electronic warfare systems, tri service inventory, and surface to air Missiles as per an official statement. 

According to the release, these acquisitions will ensure greater mobility, strengthen air defence, streamline supply chains and boost operational effectiveness of the armed forces. Nod given for countermeasure vessels, including mine counter vessels and underwater autonomous vessels to safeguard naval and merchant shipping, the Ministry of Defence stated.

Acceptance of Necessity (AON) reflects the government’s formal acceptance of the essentiality of the system or equipment. 

In an interview, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman emphasised the government’s long standing commitment to defence capital funding, citing Operation Sindoor as a testament to the armed forces tech capabilities and the need for continued funding. 

In March, the DAC sanctioned AONs for eight capital acquisitions worth more than 54,000 crore including  1350 HP engines for the Army.

On Thursday, AoNs were granted for moored mines, mine countermeasure vessels, super rapid gun mounts, and submersible autonomous vessels to address threats to naval and commercial ships, the government stated. These measures underscore the dedication to strengthening maritime safety.
