Karnataka CM Resigns: DK Shivakumar Takes the Mantle

Is it the end of an era for Siddaramaiah in politics? “My entry into politics was accidental, because no one from my family was ever in politics. I had never dreamed that one day I would become an MLA, a minister, the chief minister, or the leader of the opposition,” stated Siddaramaiah while submitting his resignation to Prabhushankar, Special Secretary to Governor Thawar Chand Gehlot, on May 28.

The Reason Behind the Resignation

The people must be thinking it was a sudden move by the party, but behind the scenes, it wasn’t a sudden decision. This was a friendly promise, mutually agreed upon by the party, Siddaramaiah, and D.K. Shivakumar back in 2023, and they made a deal.

Both leaders wanted to be the CM of Karnataka, so to keep both of them happy, the Congress party decided that Siddaramaiah would be the CM for the first three years, and later on, he would hand over the position to Shivakumar.

Siddaramaiah kept his promise. After the detailed discussion with the top party leaders earlier this week, he knew it was time to step down. On Thursday morning, he called his team and shared the news with them, and he resigned.

Speaking to reporters, the 77-year-old leader smiled and said he is leaving with a happy heart:

“My leaders asked me to step down two days ago, and I am doing exactly that today. I am so grateful that I got to serve the people of Karnataka as Chief Minister twice in my life.”

While submitting his resignation, he even told the media that party leaders had offered him a seat in the Rajya Sabha, which he refused, as he wanted to stay in Karnataka with his people and contribute to Karnataka’s state politics.

D.K. Shivakumar’s Rise to Power

While Siddaramaiah stepped aside, it was time for D.K. Shivakumar to come into power, who was serving as a Deputy Chief Minister and the organisational backbone.

The Congress Legislature Party (CLP) is expected to meet and officially name the new Chief Minister of the State. Rumours claim that the party is waiting for the auspicious day as per astrology. The swearing ceremony for new cabinet members and Shivakumar can take place on Saturday or Sunday on the grand steps of the Vidhana Soudha building

Being a Chief Minister won’t be an easy job for Shivakumar, as he has to be very careful in making everyone happy, the supporters of Siddaramaiah, the people of Karnataka and the party leaders.
