India Stands To Meet The Coal Demand In Summer

The escalating tensions over conflicts in Middle Eastern countries are becoming a threat to the global energy supplies. But India is ready to tackle the unexpected coal demand in summer with 210 million metric tons of stock available in the country, which would be adequate for 88 days of consumption, as remarked in a statement by the coal ministry on Wednesday. This stock is an addition to the inventory, already available at power plants, around 54.05 million tons as recorded on March 9 2026. The statement also states that it would be sufficient for nearly 24 days at the current consumption rate.

Pithead coal stocks at mines of Coal India Limited are estimated to stand at 106.78 million tonnes and rising to 121.39 million tonnes as of March this year. Now India aims to boost the coal demand in the summer after the destruction caused by the Middle East conflict, affecting the natural gas supply. India says it will likely rely more on generating its own coal capacity to meet the power supply demand in the coming summer.

Coal production and supply continue to stay higher than the consumption by 31st March this year. Given the current scenario, India is suggested to open the routes of exports for the neighbouring countries and look forward to the remarkable fusion of domestic coal in power plants. Additionally, the coal ministry continues to stay focused on stabilising the performance through policy facilitation.
