NPCI to Roll Out  Exclusive UPI Rules from August 1

Starting August 1, 2025, the NPCI will implement new UPI rules, introducing updated API guidelines for banks and payment apps. The changes aim to improve features like AutoPay and balance checks, enhancing system stability during peak usage.

Everyday payments may stay the same, but the new UPI rules will tighten controls on functions like balance checks, transaction updates, and more.

According to NPCI, the move aims to boost UPI’s reliability and reduce disruptions during peak hours.

Users will now be limited to 50 balance inquiries per day on each UPI app, a step aimed at reducing system strain from high API traffic.

You can retrieve bank account details tied to your mobile number a maximum of 25 times per day, to ease server demand.

Subscription payments will be handled exclusively during low-traffic periods before 10 AM, between 1 PM and 5 PM, or after 9:30 PM.

Pending transactions can now be checked only three times, with a 90 second gap between attempts. This is done to prevent slowdowns and service disruptions during peak hours.

Recent outages in April and May disrupted service for millions nationwide.

NPCI attributes many issues to heavy traffic from repeated API requests like frequent balance checks and multiple status updates, which overload UPI infrastructure and drive the need for tighter controls.
