OpenAI CEO (Chief Executive Officer) Sam Altman landed in India late at night on February 4, 2025. It’s his first visit after he came to India in June 2023, when he discussed AI regulations with PM Modi. Sam Altman will first meet PM Modi and then India’s IT, Rail, and I&B Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on this visit.
Last week, Mr Vaishnaw announced that the government would develop an Indigenous, foundational large language model (LLM) with leading Indian startups. This model is expected to be ready in 10 months and will compete with leading AI models like ChatGPT, Gemini, and DeepSeek.
The OpenAI’s visit comes amidst a major upset in the AI world caused by China’s Deepseek. This AI model has surpassed the US-developed ChatGPT with its open-source nature, cost-effectiveness, faster response time, low resource requirement, etc.Â
OpenAI has also been facing legal troubles in India despite the country being its second-largest market after the US. The news agency ANI filed a copyright lawsuit against OpenAI in the Delhi High Court (HC), alleging unauthorised use of its content.
However, OpenAI has argued that it only uses publicly available data under fair use principles. The company also claimed that no court in India has the jurisdiction to try it for copyright violations. According to the company, its servers are located in the US, and if any company wants to challenge OpenAI legally, it must file a case in California.
