India To Bring Its Own Gen AI To Join Global AI Race

The Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw made a groundbreaking announcement on the Utkarsh Odisha Conclave, which occurred on 28th and 29 January 2025 in Bhubaneswar. He shared that India is ready to develop its own generative AI (Artificial Intelligence) model and join global players like DeepSeek and ChatGPT.

This initiative will be backed by India AI Compute Facility, which has secured 18,000 GPUs (Graphics Processing Units) to drive the development of LLMs (Large Language Models). Vaishnaw also revealed plans to establish AI data centres in Odisha, which would be a significant step towards empowering India’s AI ecosystem and digital infrastructure.

For a long time, the Indian government has been investing in AI research and infrastructure to reduce reliance on foreign AI models and build its own digital ecosystem. The India AI Compute Facility plays a critical part in developing the AI model. The move is a significant step towards India’s broader strategy of decentralising technology infrastructure beyond metropolitan cities.
ChatGPT, which has over 100 million registered users, and DeepSeek are intensifying the race for AI supremacy every day. The Indian government is pushing AI adoption across various industries, such as education, healthcare, and finance, to prepare the country for its own AI model.
