The COO Turning Agriculture into a Weapon Against Malnutrition
Chief Operating Officer
Some leaders chase titles. Ravinder Grover has always chased purpose. His career, spanning rural villages, corporate boardrooms, and global summits, has been bound by a single question: how can food systems be redesigned to nourish people and communities for generations? Today, as Chief Operating Officer of HarvestPlus Solutions, that question fuels his mission to end hidden hunger by embedding nutrient-enriched staples into everyday diets. Grover’s journey began at Unilever, where he worked with rural women entrepreneurs in India. Watching dignity and opportunity ignite transformation in some of the country’s most remote villages left him with a lifelong lesson—that true impact must be deeply personal yet scalable. He carried that insight into more than a decade in plant nutrition and agri-retail, where he discovered how science, markets, and advisory services could uplift farmers. Consulting with a Big Four firm further sharpened his ability to translate bold visions into actionable strategies for governments and large systems. At HarvestPlus Solutions, Grover unites these experiences to drive change at scale. From promoting iron-biofortified pearl millet that can deliver up to 80% of daily iron needs to digitising nutrition-smart farming with tools like AI-powered advisories and XRF testing, he is reimagining how agriculture can fight malnutrition. Partnerships such as NutriHarvest, NutriFarms, and Nutri Pathshala have delivered millions of meals, empowered farmers, and strengthened school feeding programmes. Recognised with the ET Ascent Business Leader “Mark of Excellence” award, Grover continues to prove that leadership is not about position—it is about planting systems of change that endure. Speaking more about his journey with TradeFlock, Ravinder opens his heart out.
Can you share a major challenge you faced as COO and how you managed it?
Transitioning HarvestPlus into HarvestPlus Solutions was one of the most complex challenges of my career. It was more than a structural shift; it was a cultural transformation. We had to move from a research-driven legacy to a scaling organisation with the speed and agility of business. Strategically, this meant creating market-facing models, building revenue pipelines, and designing rapid delivery systems—all while safeguarding scientific integrity. Culturally, the journey was even tougher. For many, it felt like leaving behind a cherished legacy. My role was to reframe this process as evolution, not loss—an expansion of impact rather than a departure from purpose. The key was anchoring every decision in mission, celebrating small but visible wins, and showing through action that “business-like” could still mean “mission-true”. What began with scepticism grew into belief and ownership—turning the transition into one of the most rewarding journeys of my career.
If you could drive one fundamental shift in how organisations tackle food and nutrition security, what would it be, and why now?
If I could spark one fundamental shift, it would be this: to move from short-term projects to lasting ecosystems. Too often, food and nutrition programmes remain pilots—impactful but isolated. The real transformation happens when we embed them into public systems, government schemes, and markets so they become part of everyday life. Nutrient-enriched staples are a clear example. When woven into school meals, maternal health programmes, and farmer supply chains, they can permanently lift communities out of nutrition insecurity. And the timing couldn’t be more critical. Governments are aligning, markets are evolving, and science has never been stronger. What is needed now is courage not just to act, but to empower local systems, enable ownership, and then step back. That is how we turn food security from a programme into a generational guarantee.
If I could share one lesson with aspiring COOs, it is this: momentum beats perfection. Real impact comes from what we execute, not what we endlessly plan."
What’s a recent initiative at HarvestPlus Solutions that excites you most, and why?
The initiative that inspires me most today is Nutri Pathshala, our school-based nutrition programme, now championed by Padma Shri Sanjeev Kapoor, India’s most iconic chef. Its vision is simple yet transformative: to make nutrition joyful, aspirational, and accessible to every child. In rural India, nearly one in three children still arrives at school without breakfast. In just two years, Nutri Pathshala has served over 3.5 million fortified meals across six states while also launching Arogya Clubs and Nutri Diaries that make nutrition education engaging and empowering. For me, this is more than a project—it is a movement. Because when children take pride in eating healthy, they influence families, schools, and communities. That is how generational change begins—one meal, one child at a time.
If you had to give one piece of advice to future COOs, what would it be?
If I could share one lesson with aspiring COOs, it is this: momentum beats perfection. Real impact comes from what we execute, not what we endlessly plan. Pilot with courage, adapt with speed, and scale what works. Yet remember— operations are never just about processes; they are about people. Listen deeply, respect local knowledge, and co-create solutions with humility. True leadership lies in balancing precision with empathy. And above all, dare to challenge the status quo. The world doesn’t need more caretakers of tradition—it needs operators bold enough to reimagine the future.
