You can’t lead a premium EV revolution with yesterday’s playbook. Vishal Tyagi, Chief Operating Officer at HMC HIVE, understands this better than most. At the forefront of transforming India’s next-gen mobility landscape, he’s turned operations into a strategic engine, where manufacturing rigour meets agile thinking, and every process is aligned with purpose, people, process performance, and planet. With over three decades of expertise across automotive, off-highway, and advanced mobility sectors, Vishal brings a systems-level mindset to every challenge, whether it’s scaling sustainable supply chains, complex manufacturing environment, embedding digitisation, or launching future-ready products. But his real differentiator lies in how he’s redefined operational excellence, not as a race to reduce cost, but as a mission to create intelligent, adaptive, and values-driven ecosystems. At HMC HIVE, he’s building more than just capability; he’s laying the operational foundations for a brand that aims to lead in innovation, trust, and long-term impact. His leadership proves that when people are placed at the centre, leverage technology as a backbone, and align strategy with sustainability, operations don’t just support growth, they accelerate it. Speaking with TradeFlock, Vishal shares more about his work and journey.
How do you balance strategic vision with on-the-ground operational realities?
For me, balancing strategy with execution is all about staying grounded. Having worked both on the shop floor and in leadership, I’ve learnt that big visions only succeed when they connect with everyday realities. I keep the communication flowing across all levels, track key KPIs, and turn strategy into tangible actions such as introducing real-time dashboards, modular assembly lines, and digital upskilling programmes. It’s not just about setting direction from the top; it’s about involving teams, using data intelligently, and ensuring everyone understand how their work ties into the bigger picture. That’s how strategy becomes real, relevant, and executable.
What real impact does Industry 4.0 have on EV manufacturing in India, and what’s your role in it?
Industry 4.0 isn’t just a buzzword; it’s a paradigm shift in how we design, build, and deliver value. In India’s EV manufacturing sector, smart factories and automation help us transition from rigid batch production to agile, scalable systems. This shift ensures better quality consistency, real-time traceability, and enhanced safety, critical for EVs. At HMC HIVE, we leverage IoT-driven data capture and analytics to minimise downtime, boost throughput, and shift from reactive to predictive maintenance. My role is to make this evolution people-centric, not just techdriven. I focus on cross-functional collaboration, workforce upskilling, and embedding a shared digital vision, ensuring Industry 4.0 delivers real and measurable impact.
What’s one overlooked operational challenge in EV manufacturing, and how are you addressing it?
One often overlooked challenge in EV manufacturing is building a resilient, localised supply chain, especially for batteries and electronic components. While production scale and automation get most of the attention, a weak supply chain can derail everything. At HMC HIVE, we’ve prioritised strong local supplier partnerships, promoting innovation within India, and maintaining safety stocks for critical parts. We also integrate suppliers digitally, enabling real-time visibility and proactive risk management. This approach not only protects operational continuity but also supports the broader goal of a self-reliant and sustainable EV ecosystem, something industry leaders must prioritise as the sector scales rapidly
How do you stay operationally agile amid constant change?
Operational agility today is about more than speed, it’s about adaptability. At HMC HIVE, we focus on three core pillars to stay ahead. First, we place the customer at the centre, using real-time feedback and analytics to quickly adapt to evolving needs. Second, we invest in flexible manufacturing and modular processes that let us adjust to evolving designs, technologies, and regulations with minimal disruption.Third, we empower our teams on the ground, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and ownership. By combining smart technology, cross-functional collaboration, and agile mindsets, we ensure that agility isn’t a reaction, but a built-in strength.
"What excites me most is the chance to leapfrog into a cleaner, smarter and more inclusive mobility future."
What excites you about India’s EV future, and how do you see yourself contributing to it?
What excites me most is the chance to leapfrog into a cleaner, smarter and more inclusive mobility future. We’re not just replacing fuel types, we’re redefining mobility for Indian roads, cities, and communities. The industry is still taking shape, which gives us the freedom to design solutions tailored to local needs, rather than replicating global blueprints. At HMC HIVE, our mission is to lead this shift by promoting conscious commuting and sustainable urban mobility. Personally, I see my role as bridging operational excellence with innovation by blending smart manufacturing, digital integration, and sustainability into every part of the value chain. It’s not just about building efficient EVs; it’s about creating impact-driven products that inspire trust, solve real-world challenges, and contribute to a more sustainable future for generations to come.
