S.Saravanan

Founder & Director

Grand Royal Tours Pvt. Ltd.

In 2023, over 12.5 crore Indians flew domestically, a testament to India’s flourishing tourism industry. Amid this growth, S.Saravanan, Founder and Director of Grand Royal Tours, has truly made his mark. Hailing from a middle-class family in Tamil Nadu, Saravanan embarked on his journey with just `200 and a dream to see the Taj Mahal. His ambition has since transformed into an enterprise that spans 104 countries. Grand Royal Tours is not merely a travel agency; it’s a benchmark of luxury, personalisation, and trust in a competitive sector. Saravanan’s success isn’t only defined by impressive numbers—10 branches across Tamil Nadu and over 50k happy travellers—but by his hands-on approach. He believes in personally experiencing each destination and customising itineraries to meet his client’s unique aspirations. From Tamil-speaking guides in France to serving dosa in China, he ensures every journey feels like home. TradeFlock recently spoke with this visionary, exploring the inspiring journey of a man who turns passion into purpose and dreams into destinations.

What inspired you to start Grand Royal Tours?

My venture into the tourism industry was ignited by a childhood dream of standing before the Taj Mahal. Growing up in a middle-class family, that was my ultimate aspiration. Organising my first trip for 24 members of the Agaram Friends Association proved transformative. When someone suggested I start a travel company, that encouragement sparked my passion. By 2001, I was organising international tours, and by 2004, I fully committed to this path. I entered this industry not for luxury but to uncover its possibilities. Today, after 24 years, that simple dream has grown into a mission to inspire others to explore the world.

What are some of your proudest achievements so far?

Despite the usual financial and regulatory challenges, I’m proud of our accomplishments. We are now the only travel company in Tamil Nadu with 10 branches, and this year, we have operated tours in 104 countries—a feat even major players haven’t achieved. Starting from places like Salem and Coimbatore, we’ve proven that ambition knows no location. A highlight has been vendors from Europe and America now seeking us out, turning the tables from searching for partnerships to being sought after. We’ve also become top buyers for many airlines in Tamil Nadu, securing excellent deals for our clients—a far cry from the early days when selling even 20 tickets felt daunting.

With 10 branches across Tamil Nadu, how do you see opportunities for national expansion, and what’s your strategy?

With 10 branches in Tamil Nadu, we see significant opportunities for national expansion. The tourism sector is rebounding post-pandemic, with 2023 seeing 12.5 crore domestic flyers—the highest since independence. With 80 new airports planned, this number could hit 20 crores. Additionally, 2.5% of Tamil Nadu’s population travels abroad annually, translating to about 2 lakh international travellers. We aim to capture at least a 2% market share in South India. Also, we are moving towards Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and eventually Karnataka by 2026, transitioning to a franchise model to speed up growth.

Having explored all 7 continents, what’s next on your travel bucket list?

I started my journey with a dream of visiting the Taj Mahal, and I’m now aiming to join the Centurion Club by visiting 100 countries by next March. Our personal exploration of destinations makes us unique—we never use intermediaries from authentic Balkan and South American tours to ensure Indian cuisine across 104 countries and provide Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Hindi and English-speaking Tour Managers and Local Guides in places like Europe, the USA, UK, Australia and all other countries. We focus on every detail to create unforgettable experiences for our clients.

As CEO, what were your biggest challenges, and how did you overcome them?

As CEO, my biggest challenge was overcoming the perception that tourism wasn’t a legitimate business. People often questioned my commitment. Starting with just 200 rupees, a wife, and a 2-year-old son, I navigated financial hurdles alone—booking flights and paying deposits without major support. What motivated me was my dedication to serving others:

“Making others happy brings trust and success.”

Eventually, this commitment led to frequent travels, easing my financial struggles. Those early challenges reinforced my belief that persistence can turn dreams into reality.

Which country has inspired you the most, and why?

India has inspired me the most with its vast diversity. It’s like a world in itself, from Tamil Nadu, Madurai Meenakshi Amman Temple and Kerala’s tranquil backwaters to Rajasthan’s golden deserts and the snowy peaks of Himachal to Goa’s lively beaches. I also admire countries like New Zealand and Norway, which blend nature with modernity beautifully. For sheer opulence, Las Vegas and Dubai exemplify the limits of imagination. Each of these places tells a unique story that resonates deeply with me.

What advice would you give to aspiring entrepreneurs in the tourism industry?

If you want to break into the tourism industry, my advice is simple: start small and learn big. The sector offers immense opportunities— contributing 8% to India’s economy, with 25 crore people travelling annually. Rather than launching your venture immediately, consider gaining experience at an established company first. With roles ranging from visa managers to tour guides, the tourism industry has a lot to offer for those willing to explore. Embrace the journey!
