TATA Motors, one of India’s biggest and oldest industrial groups, overtook Hyundai and became the second-highest seller of passenger vehicles in the domestic market after decades in December 2021. Despite the second wave of COVID-19, the sales grew by 27% and reported 30 lakh units sold for only the third time in history.
Besides this, the company also earned the distinction of posting the highest-ever monthly sales in December, the highest-ever quarterly sales in October to December, and the highest annual sales in 2021.
TATA Motors dispatched around 35,300 units against Hyundai, a South Korean carmaker, which has shipped about 32,312 units in December 2021. Talking about the quarterly sales, TATA has shipped 99,000 vehicles from October to December and ended sales with 3.31 lakh units.
Hyundai Motor India was insulated for most of 2021 from the semiconductor shortage; the company was forced to correct production and even observe ‘No Production Days’ due to a shortage of parts over the last few months.
Tarun Garg, the director of sales and marketing at Hyundai Motor India, said HMI had managed challenges to ensure smooth deliveries of cars despite key component supply constraints to its customers.
Reviewing the December sales, Shailesh Chandra, President of Passenger Vehicles Business Unit of TATA Motors Ltd., stated that despite witnessing a shortfall in production due to the ongoing semiconductor crisis, the company had set several new milestones in 2021.
In addition to this, the company also posted over the electronic vehicle sales. TATA posted its records of 2,255 unit electronic vehicle sales while taking the quarterly sales to a peak of 5,592 units.
