Tesla entered the Indian market with the launch of its first showroom at Mumbai’s Bandra Kurla Complex on July 15, backed by a $1 million investment as stated by Reuters.
Tesla announced that the event will mark its official entry into India with the inauguration of a Tesla Experience Centre at Mumbai’s Bandra Kurla Complex.. Bloomberg reported that VIPs and business partners will have priority access, with public entry beginning the following week.
As per Bloomberg, Tesla vehicle deliveries in India are expected to begin in late August, citing a person familiar with the matter. This follows the official showroom opening on 15 July and signals a major step in Tesla’s staged market entry.
Shipping data from January to June shows Tesla brought vehicles, Superchargers, and accessories into India mainly from China and the U.S. Reuters reported that six Model Y units were imported five priced at $32,500 each, with one long-range version worth $46,000.
Despite high 70% import taxes, Tesla is bringing vehicles into India amid excess production and declining demand elsewhere.
Authorities have extended an invitation to Tesla to establish manufacturing operations in India under a new EV policy. However, Elon Musk’s anticipated visit last year, where he was expected to announce a $2–3 billion investment, was cancelled.
Tesla has so far declined to commit to domestic manufacturing, choosing instead to market imported vehicles in India, officials report.
Earlier this year, Tesla advertised job openings for India and has staffed sales, service, and store management roles, while still recruiting for supply chain and autonomous driving positions.
