Crackdown On Spam Callers: TRAI Blocks 2+ Lakh Numbers

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), in a major crackdown, blocked over two lakh mobile numbers and blacklisted 50 companies as a strict action against UTMs (Unregistered Telemarketers). According to TRAI, these actions were necessary to curb the growing concerns of spam calls in India and provide some relief to active users. These actions came after the regulator TRAI, on August 13, issued directives to service to stop promotional voice calls from unregistered marketers immediately.

TRAI mentioned, “Taking this issue seriously, TRAI had issued stringent directives to all Access Providers on 13th August 2024. It has mandated Access Providers to immediately stop promotional voice calls from unregistered senders or telemarketers using SIP, PRI, or other telecom resources.” It further mentioned, “Any UTM found to be misusing these resources will face severe consequences, including disconnection of all telecom resources for up to two years and blacklisting.” The regulator issued directives after receiving over 7.9 lakh complaints against unregistered telemarketers during the first half of 2024.
