Tesla, a US-based electric vehicle manufacturer, currently offers only the Model Y SUV in India. In July, Tesla opened its first showroom in India, where sales dropped to 40 units in October, bringing the cumulative total to 104 units, having delivered 64 units in September.
According to the industry body Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA) data, India’s electric vehicle market experienced retail sales of 18,055 units in October, compared to 15,329 units in September, recording a month-on-month (m-o-m) growth of 17.78%. However, Tesla’s retail sales in October slipped 37.5% m-o-m. The company currently operates two showrooms in India, located at Maker Maxity, Bandra Kurla Complex, Mumbai, and Worldmark 3, Aerocity, New Delhi.
Tesla’s still in the early stages of entering India’s developing EV market. The Model Y’s pricing positions competitively against luxury electric SUVs from Mercedes-Benz and BMW. The Model Y has been introduced in India as a competently built unit (CBU) and is available in Rear Wheel Drive (RWD) configuration.
Tesla has concentrated on enhancing cabin refinement with a revised suspension setup and laminated glass for the roof and windows, which helps minimise noise. The Model Y is available in six colour options, with Stealth Grey as the standard colour, and others priced up upto ₹1.85 lakh higher.
