Google DeepMind and Film Studio A24 Sign Major AI Deal

Google DeepMind has signed a historic AI research partnership with the acclaimed independent film studio A24. According to an official announcement on the Google Blog, the two organisations are teaming up to explore how advanced AI can support filmmakers and creative professionals without replacing human artistry.

“We believe the best way to develop tools that empower artists is to work directly with them. By collaborating with filmmakers and industry leaders like A24 from the beginning, we can build new AI features to support artists in authentic, meaningful storytelling that helps enable their creative vision.” Demis Hassabis, co-founder and CEO of Google DeepMind, said.

As part of this multi-year collaboration, Alphabet’s Google has made a massive $75 million investment in the independent studio, marking tech giant Google’s first known financial stake in a Hollywood film production company. The New York-based indie studio is globally celebrated for producing highly original, auteur-driven cinema hits such as the Oscar-winning “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” the Timothée Chalamet-starrer “Marty Supreme,” and the viral horror sensation “Backrooms”.

Unlike typical entertainment contracts, this $75 million, multi-year deal focuses strictly on collaborative R&D rather than licensing data. A source said that Google is restricted from using A24’s library to train its AI models, protecting the studio’s intellectual property.

The collaboration focuses on developing AI tools for pre-production and storyboarding, serving as creative assistants rather than replacements. By providing A24 with advanced technical resources, this initiative highlights a human-centric approach to AI and establishes a potential new standard for future collaborations between technology firms and the entertainment industry.
