Airalo: An Invisible Bridge that Keeps the World Connected

Hypothetically, if we arrive in a new country, excited, only to be greeted by costly roaming plans, confusing SIM cards, or the need to find a local shop that may or may not speak our language, it can be disheartening. Airalo aims to close the gap between people and seamless connectivity. It’s based on a simple idea: borderless mobile data, that’s changing how we travel, work, and stay connected worldwide.

At its core, Airalo is about freedom, the freedom to move without losing signal, explore without worrying about costs, and stay connected to what matters, no matter where you are. Its goal is clear and powerful: make mobile data as borderless as travel itself. Inspired by real traveller challenges and driven by the belief that connectivity should be easy, fair, and everywhere, Airalo’s quiet motto is connection without complication.

Origin of Airalo: Born From a Traveller’s Problem

Airalo began with lived experience. Frequent travellers and remote workers knew the struggle of swapping SIM cards, paying high roaming fees, or relying on unstable Wi-Fi. The founders, Bahadir Ozdemir and Abraham Burak, saw that while smartphones had evolved, mobile connectivity hadn’t kept pace.

Launched in 2019, Airalo introduced a radical yet obvious innovation: a digital marketplace for eSIMs. No plastic cards. No waiting lines. Just data plans you could download instantly. From day one, the idea was clear: if music, movies, and money could go digital, why not SIM cards? What started as a small solution quickly resonated with a global audience, proving that the problem was universal.

Technological Stack of Airalo

Airalo’s magic lies in making complex technology feel invisible. At the core is eSIM technology, which enables devices to download mobile data plans digitally, eliminating the need for physical SIM cards. Behind this simplicity lies a robust technological backbone.

Airalo operates a global platform that connects users with local and regional telecom providers worldwide. Its mobile apps and web platform are built for speed, security, and ease of use. Cloud-based infrastructure ensures scalability, while strong encryption protects user data and transactions.

Notable Milestones of Airalo

Airalo’s growth has been remarkable, steadily organic and consistently impressive. As the pioneer of the world’s first eSIM store, it has delivered coverage across hundreds of countries and regions.

By July 2025, Airalo achieved the status of the world’s first eSIM unicorn after securing $220 million in Series C funding, led by CVC. The platform’s user base soared from 10 million in May 2024 to over 20 million worldwide by April 2025. Later in 2024 and into 2025, Airalo’s Singapore subsidiary became profitable, reporting a $10.1 million profit on revenue of $286 million.

In mid-2025, expanded unlimited data bundles and specialised packages for data, text, and voice were launched in selected markets, allowing users to “connect like a local.”

Throughout its journey, millions of backpackers and business leaders have embraced the platform, driven by rapid global expansion, strategic partnerships with telecom providers worldwide, and regional and international data plans that simplify cross-border connectivity.

Beyond individual travellers, Airalo has expanded to serve businesses and remote teams with tailored solutions. Every milestone underscores a core philosophy: solve real problems effectively and grow thoughtfully.

Market Opportunities of Airalo

Airalo is riding the wave of a borderless world, and the timing couldn’t be better. As international travel, remote work, digital nomads, and cross-border businesses surge, eSIM-compatible devices are becoming the norm. This shift and evolution have created a tremendous opportunity.

The Airalo Partners platform expanded to support more than 5,000 enterprise partners by August 2025, offering B2B and B2B2C solutions for corporate connectivity and travel resellers. In October 2025, the company unveiled a comprehensive redesign of its mobile app (iOS and Android), introducing easier installation, side-by-side plan comparisons, and a new “Check Your Connection” tool.

Travellers crave flexibility, companies need global teams to stay connected, and emerging markets seek affordable data access. Airalo sits perfectly at the crossroads of these needs.

As industries embrace mobility and physical SIM cards gradually fade away, Airalo’s market continues to strengthen. It’s not just riding a trend—it’s shaping one.

Fundings of Airalo

Airalo’s vision has attracted strong investor confidence. Over the years, the company has raised multiple rounds of funding from global investors who believe in its mission and growth potential.

Airalo has raised $287 million across five funding rounds and is valued at over $1 billion as of its latest Series C round in July 2025. The company is the first unicorn in the eSIM industry.

Its key investors include CVC Capital Partners, Peak XV Partners, Orange Ventures, KPN Ventures, LG Technology Ventures and Rakuten Capital. These investments have helped Airalo expand its team, strengthen its technology, and reach new markets faster. More than the money, the funding represents trust, trust that Airalo is building something lasting in the global connectivity space.

Why Airalo Matters?

Airalo matters because it changes how we experience the world. It removes friction from travel. It supports remote workers chasing dreams across borders. It helps families stay connected across continents. And it does all this quietly, without demanding attention.

In an age when connectivity equals opportunity, Airalo democratises access. It tells users, “You don’t need to choose between travel and connection, you can have both.”

Ultimately, Airalo isn’t just selling data plans. It’s building bridges between countries, cultures, and people. And in a world that often feels divided, that kind of connection matters more than ever.
