Indian professionals working in the U.S. are facing new challenges. Major tech companies, including Amazon, Google, Apple, Microsoft, Meta, and others, have issued urgent advisories for their H-1B visa holders. These advisories urge employees not to leave the country due to the rising concern that it may affect their re-entry.
This uncertainty stems from U.S. President Donald Trump’s tightening of Visa rules, which has birthed new challenges for Indian H-1B visa holders.
The H-1B visa is a popular work visa among skilled foreign workers, especially those in the tech sector. This visa requires at least a bachelor’s degree or the equivalent. The initial duration of an H-1B visa is three years, which may be extended for a maximum of six years.
As per the reports, two H-1B holders have cancelled their plans to travel to India because they would not be allowed to re-enter the United States. One Indian worker also expressed concern over the Trump administration’s revoking birthright citizenship. Indians in the United States are worried that any future child might end up stateless, neither American nor Indian, if the law is changed.
U.S. tech companies are highly reliant on foreign workers, especially Indians, with India’s IT outsourcing firms like Infosys and Cognizant accounting for a major chunk of H-1B applications.
Trump has continuously changed U.S. policies since he came into power. His comeback has sparked widespread speculations due to his increased tariff policies, etc. This is yet to see how his new strategies impact the Middle East.
