Amazon to Invest in Maharashtra’s Cloud Infrastructure

Amazon Web Services (AWS), Amazon’s cloud computing division, has announced an investment of approximately $8.2 billion in Maharashtra over the next five years. The investment amount is expected to grow by $24.2 billion by 2028, per the Information Technology Ministry.

“Along with the investment, there will be significant employment growth,” Minister of Electronics and Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw said, adding that the investments will roll out by 2029-2030.

The investment will primarily focus on expanding AWS’s cloud infrastructure, including constructing new data centres and enhancing existing services. With this, Amazon will deploy its latest graphics processing units and cloud management in India.

Amazon runs two data centres in India – one in Mumbai, which started in 2016, and another in Hyderabad, which was established in 2022.

The e-commerce giant will also invest an additional $2 billion in India, Asia’s third-largest economy, to boost e-commerce business.

Amazon is the world’s largest and most influential e-commerce company, founded by Jeff Bezos. Starting with the bookstore, Amazon has evolved into a huge giant and diversified its business into a wide range of sectors, including cloud computing. AWS’s continuous growth made it a critical part of Amazon’s business model.
