CNN Appoints Alex Charalambides As CTO

Cable News Channel (CNN) has appointed a new Chief Technology Officer (CTO). The multimedia cable news channel named Alex Charalambides for this post who will officially join CNN on Monday, 28 November. 

Under this designation, he will report to Patty Hirsch, global EVP of consumer digital for Warner Bros. Discovery. In this role, he will administer the technology for CNN and its digital platforms that serve millions of users around the globe every month. 

“Charalambides will partner directly with the new CNN Digital chief Athan Stephanopoulos to identify strategic consumer plans and drive the technical execution of these plans,” ━Warner Bros. Discovery technology boss Patty Hirsch told company staffers via memo.

In recent times, CNN has seen an abounding turnover following Discovery’s acquisition to form Warner Bros. Discovery. 

Before this, CNN appointed Athan Stephanopolous, previously President of Group Nine Media’s NowThis, as the head of CNN digital. He is a seasoned engineering executive who will help boost CNN’s digital platform performance.

Charalambides first joined Insider in 2018, which is owned by European media company Axel Springer. In his role, “he led teams that built a lightning-fast, world-class experience to deliver editorial content to users, backed by a bespoke, robust and performant platform for their growing subscription, syndication, and affiliate businesses,” according to Hirsch’s memo.

Before this, Alex served as a leader in Time Inc.’s Sports Illustrated. Here, he expands his scope by overseeing its digital brand technical team, including Entertainment Weekly and People. 

In addition to this appointment on Monday, CNN also announced to staffers that longtime programming chief Michael Bass is Leaving the outlet.
