Gautam Adani, Asia’s richest person, has become the world’s third richest man. With a whopping $ 137.4 billion fortune, Gautam Adani has taken over France’s businessman Bernard Arnault and now trails Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos of the US in the ranking.Â
It is the first time an Asian has broken into the top three of the Bloomberg Billionaires Index; in fact, fellow members India’s Mukesh Ambani and China’s Jack Ma never made it that far.Â
A college dropout who first tried his luck as a diamond trader now secured third place on the world’s richest person list.Â
Adani has experience in different sectors, from cement to coal, media, etc. His group is now the biggest conglomerate in India and owns the largest private-sector ports, airport operator, city-gas distributor, and coal mine.Â
According to the reports, Mr. Gautam has added $60.9 billion to his fortune in 2022 alone. He first took over Ambani as the richest Asian in February 2022. Then became a centibillionaire in April and surpassed Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates by $230 billion as the world’s fourth richest person last month.Â
Adani made securing the third position possible because the world’s richest US billionaires recently boosted their philanthropy. Bill Gates in July transferred $20 billion to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, whereas Warren Buffett has donated more than $35 billion to the charity. The billions of dollars spent on philanthropy pushed them lower on the Bloomberg wealth rank.
Adani, too, has increased his charity and donated $7.7 billion, in June, for social causes on his 60th birthday. The details have been kept secret.Â
Adani is continuously expanding his business and spreading his wings to the 5G spectrum, media, cement industry, green hydrogen business, etc., making him a powerful businessman.
