California-based Meta Platform Inc. is dismissing 3,000 employees, 5% of its workforce. An internal memo informed employees about this on Friday, February 7, 2025. The layoff process started on Sunday, February 9, 2025, at 2:30 AM IST (Indian Standard Time).
Meta, VP (vice president) of human resources, Janelle Gale, posted the memo on Meta’s workplace forum, which said employees losing jobs would get an email on Monday morning.
The U.S. employees will receive emails at 6:30 PM IST on Monday. Within an hour of receiving the mail, employees will lose access to company systems. These emails will also include details about severance packages.
This move comes as the tech giant takes a tougher stance against underperformance and prepares its finances for this year’s heavy AI (artificial intelligence) investment plans. Meta’s CEO (Chief Executive Officer), Mark Zuckerberg, also shared with his staff about the layoff in January 2025.
Major companies have used this move, like Reliance laid off employees in August 2024. This move by Meta is causing anxiety in employees. They also share that many well-performing employees have been laid off all year.
A few employees also shared that job cuts shouldn’t be labelled performance-based cuts, as they can damage people’s reputations when they get an opportunity elsewhere.
