India Poised to Emerge As Global Foremost AI User Base

Artificial Intelligence needs to be globally accessible rather than staying in a few hands, industry leaders said at the India AI Impact Summit. Sunil Mittal, Founder and Chairman of Bharti Enterprises, said AI is already becoming prominent in telecom operations, “from our company’s standpoint. AI is becoming a really integral part of how we operate, serve customers, and build our networks”. He also said that sectors, such as healthcare, education, and medical sciences, will “flourish on the back of this”

AI adoption in India has accelerated sharply, with about 59% of firms deploying AI (IBM), 70% of knowledge workers using generative AI (Microsoft), and nearly two-thirds of enterprises integrating it into operations (NASSCOM), signalling a nationwide shift from experimentation to scaled implementation. AI will become even more widespread in India than anywhere else in the world. India is playing a leadership role in AI, transforming our mindset about data, privacy, security, and trust that they are significant.

Moreover, as per Microsoft, about 65% of Indians have used AI, which is more than double the global average. Again, a big part of why AI firms are betting big on India.

However, a major concern arises, as Shantanu Narayen points out, that in the age of generative AI, it is essential that any piece of information produced carries provenance and a watermark so that people can easily distinguish between authentic and fake content.

The conversation was fueled by many global CEOs seeking to strengthen AI’s presence, as it is already capturing the market. However,  various big CEOs have skipped this meeting, including Bill Gates, whose cancellation was followed by Nvidia’s Huang.

The sudden cancellation of Microsoft’s co-founder had a major impact on the event, which is already struggling with organisational issues, a robot row, and complaints about traffic chaos.
