Meta is collaborating with billionaire Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance Industries to build its very first AI-enabled data centre in India. Tech giant Reliance will build this new facility at its massive industrial campus in Jamnagar, Gujarat. Under this major agreement, Reliance will design, build, and operate a 168-megawatt (MW) data centre. Meta will lease the entire capacity to run its global artificial intelligence workloads and applications, such as Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp.
This massive infrastructure project is expected to become fully operational within the next two years. Both companies have also agreed on options to scale and expand the data centre’s size in the future as Meta’s computing demands grow. Meta will bear the full cost of electricity and water required to power and maintain its technology operations within the hub.
A key highlight of the Jamnagar project is its focus on eco-friendly technology, renewable energy, and water-efficient cooling systems. The facility is designed to run entirely on green energy. Additionally, it will use desalinated seawater for its high-density cooling systems instead of draining local freshwater resources. To support its clean energy goals, Meta separately signed agreements for nearly 1 gigawatt (GW) of renewable wind and solar power in India with green energy suppliers CleanMax and Fourth Partner Energy.

This deal deepens a long-standing business relationship between the two giants. Meta previously invested $5.7 billion into Reliance’s Jio Platforms in 2020. Last year, the companies formed a joint venture, Reliance Enterprise Intelligence Limited (REIL), to develop localised AI business tools.
The Jamnagar data centre marks a massive win for India’s growing digital landscape. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg stated that the world-class facility will help the company scale its AI infrastructure globally while investing in India’s digital economy. Reliance Chairman Mukesh Ambani called the deal a transformative moment, proving that India is fully ready to lead the global AI revolution. As global tech firms race to secure data servers, this mega-deal establishes India as a prime hub for international AI infrastructure.
