Microsoft-backed OpenAI announced on Monday that it will offer a ChatGPT Go subscription for free in India for 1 year, beginning November 4. This remarkable move was taken to expand adoption in its second-largest market.
The earlier OpenAI subscription plan, offered in August in India, is the most reasonable and is now priced at ₹399 ($4.54) per month. The step comes amid new rules announced by the Indian Government, starting this month, to regulate artificial intelligence offerings, with AI and social media companies required to precisely label AI-generated content to reduce the spread of deepfakes and misinformation.
After the United States, India is the second-largest market for OpenAI users, and soon it will become the biggest, said CEO Sam Altman this year.Â
Rival perplexity is offering one year free access to its premium plan to India users in collaboration with mobile carrier Bharti Airtel. On the other hand, Google has made its Gemini AI Pro free for students for the same period. Last year, within two months of ChatGPT’s launch in India, it became the fastest-growing internet application ever, attracting 100 million users in its first month. Now, it’s further expanding its market by this exceptional move.Â
