India and the United States are continuing negotiations regarding the signing of a trade agreement between the two countries, with Indian Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal indicating that the talks would not be driven by any deadline pressures, including the review of the tariffs imposed under Section 301 of US trade laws. According to Goyal, any deal that would be reached between the two nations should benefit both countries and help foster their economic development.
These remarks came after the announcement of efforts being made by both India and the US to complete the first part of the negotiations toward signing a bilateral trade agreement. In the recent meetings held between the two nations, issues such as tariff reduction, digital trade, agricultural goods, investment prospects, and resilient supply chains were discussed. The US is undertaking a review of the tariffs levied on goods imported from different countries. Section 301 of the US trade laws includes the US trade regulations. Although the exercise raises uncertainties in the global trade landscape, Indian authorities indicate that they are negotiating the deal with the US without regard for the review process.
