Manmohan Singh Dies At 92: Government Declares Mourning

Manmohan Singh, India’s former Prime Minister and one of the finest economists, passed away Thursday night at AIIMS Delhi at 92. He joined the Indian government as an economic advisor in 1971 in the commerce ministry.

Born in 1932 in Punjab, Manmohan Singh served India as prime minister between 2004 and 2014. Manmohan Singh retired from Rajya Sabha in early 2024 after serving in the house for 33 long years. 

Mr Singh was being treated for age-related medical conditions and suddenly lost consciousness on December 26, 2024. After that, he was brought to a Medical Emergency at AIIMS, New Delhi, at 8:06 PM. Despite all efforts, doctors couldn’t bring Manmohan Sing to consciousness, and at 9:51 PM, he was declared dead. 

From PM Narendra Modi to former US President Barack Obama, global and national leaders and citizens mourned Singh’s loss. 

Congress announced the cancellation of all official party programs for the next 7 days as a mark of respect for former PM Manmohan Singh. KC Venugopal, the general secretary of Congress, shared that all the programs will resume on January 3, 2025.

To show appreciation to the former Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, the Union government of India declared 7 days of mourning. There won’t be any entertainment events, and the National Flag will be flown at half-mast across the country during this time. All Indian missions and High Commissions have also been commanded to stick to the half mast. The Cabinet will meet today at 11 AM to pay tribute to Mr Singh.
