India has taken a significant leap in its green energy journey, reaching a key milestone by sourcing 50% of its total installed power capacity from renewable energy, well ahead of the 2030 target, Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi declared on Tuesday.
While visiting IIT Bombay, Joshi informed the media that India has attained 50% of its total installed power capacity from renewable sources well before the 2030 deadline.
The Minister lauded Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s foresight and leadership for the milestone, emphasising that India is swiftly positioning itself as a frontrunner in the global renewable energy landscape.
“Under the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Modi, India has ascended to a position of global prominence in the renewable energy sector,” Joshi asserted.
The Minister commended IIT Bombay’s significant advancements in energy research and innovation, emphasising that the government is actively providing substantial financial support to tackle challenges related to productivity and ensure greater stability and reliability of the power grid.
He added that, under PM Modi’s leadership, the Indian government is committing significant resources to research aimed at overcoming the crucial challenge of enhancing productivity alongside ensuring grid stability.
During his visit, Joshi commended IIT Bombay’s outstanding efforts, applauded the team, and acknowledged the efficient utilization of research funding.

The Minister served as Chief Guest and presented the keynote speech at the IVCA Renewable Energy Summit 2025 in Mumbai, hosted by the Indian Venture and Alternative Capital Association.
