Former Chief Economic Adviser, on Thursday, was appointed as the Executive Director of India’s International Monetary Fund (IMF) for the period of three years, effecting from 1 November 2022 until further orders.
Mr Subramanian, currently a Finance Professor at the Indian School of Business, will replace Surjit S. Bhalla, who was appointed in 2019 for the same post.
Mr Bhalla was appointed for this post for three years of tenure after his predecessor Subir Gokarn had passed away in July 2019 due to a brief illness.
“The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the appointment of Dr Krishnamurthy Subramanian, Professor (Finance), Indian School of Business and former Chief Economic Adviser to the post of Executive Director (India) at the International Monetary Fund (IMF), w.e.f 01.11.2022 for a period of three years or until further orders, whichever is earlier by curtailing the tenure of Dr Surjit S. Bhalla as ED (India), IMF up to 31.10.2022,” according to the orders.
Subramanian has done an MBA and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Financial Economics from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business. He pursued his PhD under the supervision of former RBI governor Raghuram Rajan. Moreover, he is also an alumnus of IIT, Kanpur, and IIM (Indian Institute of Management), Calcutta. At Kanpur, he studied electrical engineering.
Krishnamurthy Subramanian is a good name for Executive Director of the International Monetary Fund.
