Digital Payments Failure Across India: What Happened?

India’s digital payment system has faced a nationwide outage, leaving millions of users unable to access funds or complete transactions. The major disruption was noticed on the afternoon of March 26, which affected various payment platforms and financial institutions and caused widespread inconvenience.

People face problems with online payment platforms like Google Pay, Phone Pe and Paytm. Users of SBI, Axis Bank, and HDFC Bank have also struggled with online transactions and fund transfers.

The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) addressed the issue on X, stating, “NPCI experienced intermittent technical issues, leading to partial UPI disruptions. The problem has now been resolved, and the system has stabilised. We regret the inconvenience.”

A total of 2,750 users complained about digital payment disruption, out of which 296 were from Google Pay and 119 complaints were related to Paytm.

India is paving the way for a digital payment revolution, and UPI is its future. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is leaving no stone unturned in expanding UPI globally. Small disruptions can not stop India from making trillions in the dollar economy in the next few years.Â
